Key Information

The department of Forest Operations and Digitalization has a vacant position as researcher in robotics and drones for the forest sector. Future forest operations will slowly move towards autonomous machines, and we envision a role for both ground-based and flying robots.

In the first years, the researcher will work in a national research center and in a European project. SmartForest is a center for research-driven innovation established in collaboration between leading research organizations and industrial partners (www.smartforest.no ).

The primary objective of SmartForest is to improve the efficiency and environmental performance of the Norwegian forest sector and includes activities with ground-based robotics. SPADE (multi-purpose physical-cyber agri-forest drones ecosystem for governance and environmental observation) is a Horisont Europe project where we will focus on development of autonomous drone concepts for forestry applications.  

The position is located in Ås, 30 km south of Oslo. 


Main responsibilities

The researcher will be part of a small team that works with development, design and testing of robotics concepts for the forest sector.  The specific tasks of the researcher will be dependent on the background and expertise of the selected candidate.         


Professional qualifications (required)
  • Relevant PhD (e.g. robotics or mechatronics)
  • Experience with ground-based or flying robotic applications
  • Ability to publish high-quality scientific papers with the field of the position
  • A strong command of oral and written English
  • Candidates that do not master the Norwegian language have to learn written and spoken Norwegian within two years from the time of employment  

Will be evaluated positively
  • Experience with ROS
  • Experience with flying or ground-based robotics in an outdoor environment
  • Strong programming skills in Python or similar
  • Experience with sensors such as lidar, camara, IMU, and GNNS
  • Experience with machine learning techniques
  • Knowledge and interest in forestry and forest management in Europe or North-America
  • Skills in Norwegian or other Scandinavian language

  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills 
  • Ability to work under pressure and interact with demanding users 
  • Dedication and enthusiasm to work as part of an ambitious research team

The position is remunerated according to the Norwegian State Salary Scale as Researcher code 1109, salary grade 62 - 74 (NOK 604.900 - 745.000 per year), commensurate with qualifications and experience.
