Researcher (temporary position)

A part-time (50%) Researcher position is currently available at the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Clinical Science, for the duration of 2 years or from May 2024 to May 2026.

The position is part of the project “Dissecting the role of islet non-ß populations’ identity maintenance in the development of monogenic diabetes”, financed by The Norwegian Research Council.


About the project/work tasks:
  • We are seeking a dedicated Researcher with a strong interest in experimental lab work
  • The selected candidate will be in charge of managing inventory including organization, ordering, maintaining and distributing stocks (chemicals, reagents, kits, vectors, enzymes, plastics, consumables, etc.)
  • Setting up service calls for damaged equipment or required revisions, general lab assistance in experimental tasks (weaning, complex genotyping, PCR, gel electrophoresis, ELISA, immunofluorescence, cell lab work) and to support/help the other lab members during experiments

Qualifications and personal qualities:
  • Must hold a Norwegian MSc degree in Biology or Medical Science, or equivalent
  • Must be fluent in spoken English and Norwegian, and to possess excellent written skills
  • The successful applicant must have experience in working with iPSC cultures
  • A course in experimental animal science according to the experimental animal regulations' minimum requirement for such training (§24 Appendix E, 1-10) or a course in experimental animal science corresponding to FELASA A, B or C is a key requirement.
  • Documented experience from working with animals is a must.
  • Having experience with work routines at Vivarium will be considered an important plus.
  • Must not be allergic to animals

The following qualifications will be considered a plus:

  • Experience with molecular biology techniques, e.g. PCR, genotyping
  • Experience with cell biology methods, including cell culture, iPSC maintenance, in vitro differentiation, immunofluorescence stainings
  • The applicant should have followed the Fagrekvirent - behov til betaling course and hands-on experience in placing and receiving orders at UiB
  • Considerable emphasis will be placed on personal skills.
  • The candidate must document an ability to work independently and scientific creativity, high capacity for work, collaborative teamwork, strong motivation and commitment for experimental science

The following premise forms the basis for the post as research scientist:
  • The researcher will be part of the research group associated with the topic/project
  • Salary costs should as far as possible be 100% covered by external financing 
  • The researcher should actively assist in acquiring external project funding for the academic environment, for both his-/herself and others, from The Norwegian Research Council, the European Union, and other sources
  • The researcher must expect to have his/her research activity funded by the project of the researcher and the projects of the associated research group  
  • The Head of Department may allocate work for the researcher related to specific research projects
  • The researcher may may participate in committee work and other administrative tasks within the University of Bergen .
  • The researcher does not have a teaching obligation, but must expect to supervise Master- and PhD students to the extent that this forms a natural part of the research activities in the research group.
  • The researcher may apply for promotion based on competence according to the regulations for promotion
  • The basis of the post is discontinued if project funding comes to an end, and the new law on Government employees etc. regarding termination of employment and preferential rights will be applied.
