Job description

At the Faculty of Law, Department of Private Law, there is available 1 research fellowship (SKO 1017) in law affiliated with a new research centre on the importance of EEA law in Norwegian law (EURNOR), funded by the Research Council of Norway.

Appointments are preferably made for a fixed term of 4 years with 75% research and 25% teaching duties, provided that those appointed can fill an unmet teaching need at the faculty. Alternatively, employment can take place for 3 years without teaching duties.

The position is an educational position that will lead to a PhD degree from the Faculty of Law, University of Oslo.  The Faculty of Law in Oslo has Norway's largest research and teaching environment in law. The faculty's doctoral programme has  approximately 50 research fellows at any given time. It is assumed that the successful candidate qualifies for admission to the faculty's doctoral programme. More about the position

The research centre will contribute to increased understanding of interactions and challenges in the meeting point between EEA law and national law.  

The PhD project is to address selected issues related to the complexity of legal regulation in the EU/EEA; methodological challenges in the interpretation, application and implementation of EEA law; and/or the legislation, courts and public administration's handling of meeting points between Norwegian law and EEA law, including the challenges that the organisation of the Norwegian administration creates for the implementation of EEA law.

The project may want to address questions that cut across these issues. The project may address issues within specific areas of law, but may also be more cross-cutting.

Projects focusing on the significance of EU/EEA law for central fields of public law will be prioritized in this call.

Examples of areas that can be examined are administrative law, constitutional law, social security and social law, immigration law, labor law, discrimination law, environmental law, energy law, criminal law, and procedural law.

A project memorandum has been prepared that describes in more detail the research centre's approach and provides examples of topics that are relevant to the initiative.

 

Qualification requirements and skills

• For the position, a Norwegian five-year master's degree in law, or equivalent education, is required at the time of application. Normally, the applicant should have grades that place him or her among the top 10-15 per cent in the subject. This also applies to the master's thesis.
• Since Norwegian law is central to the project, Norwegian legislation and other Norwegian  sources of law will  be important sources.  The applicant must therefore have very good written and oral language skills in Norwegian, possibly another Scandinavian language, and solid English skills.
• The applicant must be able to work independently and in a structured manner.
• Good cooperation skills, the ability to contribute to professional development and a willingness to actively take part in the development of a good academic environment are required.
• The applicant must submit a project descriptionof 5-10 pages explaining the research topic, its significance and relevance to the research centre in accordance with the job description above, the choice of theory and scientific method, any research ethical challenges and how the work is planned to be carried out.
• When assessing the applicants, emphasis will be placed on the project description, grades, any previous written work and the applicant's professional and personal aptitudes for carrying out the project. It is assumed that those who are appointed will be able to complete the project during the period of employment. Due to the temporary nature of the research centre, it is desirable that those appointed take up their positions as soon as possible and normally after the end of the normal notice period.

The candidates are evaluated by an assessment committee, which ranks the candidates based on the criteria indicated above and conducts interviews with short-listed candidates. A separate interview committee may be set down.

The Faculty’s appointment committee will make the final decision about the candidate who will be offered the position.

For applicants with education from abroad, a copy of the original diploma and English or Scandinavian translation are required. Foreign diplomas must be enclosed with official documentation about the grading system, which shows which grades on the diploma are at a high academic level.
• Up to 3 academic works, such as a master's thesis, articles or other texts (published or under publication). If the works are written by several authors, the division of work between them must be documented with a co-author declaration.
• Reference list (2-3 references with name, relation to applicant and contact information).
