PhD position

At the Department of Design, there is a vacant position for a Research Fellow (100%) within furniture and object design. The position is for a fixed-term period of four years, with the desired start date of 01.08.2024.

About the project/work tasks:

We are seeking proposals for artistic development work where design practice is central to investigating our complex connections with the surrounding world. We are looking for candidates who are skilled practitioners in the design fields of furniture design, object design, or interior architecture, and who can conduct research through design.

The Department of Design prioritizes research projects that can contribute to sustainable development, human and environmentally friendly structures and materials, and humanistic and ethical communication, linked to one of three priority research areas at the department:

  • Social Innovation
  • Ecological Agency
  • Technology and Materiality

Artistic development work at the Department of Design should be reflective, process-driven, and critical. In this way, we aim to generate new knowledge that addresses current challenges and needs within various cultural, social, and political contexts. We are looking for Ph.D. candidates who will push boundaries and, in doing so, challenge established notions of what design can be and accomplish.

At the Department of Design, the candidate will be offered the opportunity to be affiliated with one of the department's three prioritized research areas, alongside colleagues from a broad interdisciplinary design field.
Applications will be assessed based on the criteria outlined in the program description of the Ph.D. program, the candidate's artistic practice, and the research competence within the department. Applicants are requested to familiarize themselves with the artistic research profile of the department and faculty, and to incorporate this in when creating a project description, please see: https://kmd.uib.no/en/research

Project Description:

The project description should position the project within an academic field, presenting themes, issues, context, methodology, as well as the planned artistic research and presentation/ dissemination. The project description should present the project's placement and relevance to the academic environment at the department, explaining any specific needs for academic and material resources, as well as addressing any legal and ethical considerations. Applicants must also indicate potential collaborating institutions and partners. We also request a separate progress plan for the various parts of the artistic research. Refer to Section 2.1 of the Program Description for additional information.

Qualifications and personal qualities:
  • Applicants must hold a five-year master's degree in design or equivalent education, completed before the application deadline.
  • Applicants must have experience in artistic practice and production at a high level.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and have the ability to cooperate with others.
  • Applicants must have good written and verbal English skills.

Personal and interpersonal qualities will be emphasized, with consideration given to ambitions and potential.
