About the position

A temporary 90% position is available at the University of Agder, Faculty of Engineering and Science as a Research Assistant in renewable energy, affiliated to the Department of Engineering Sciences , for a period of 12 months. The position is located, at the present, at Campus Grimstad but can be carried out remotely if desired. The starting date is negotiable with the Faculty but is expected to begin in June or July 2022.

Responsibilities

The number of electric vehicles is increasing worldwide and lithium-ion battery waste is increasing as a result. Lithium-ion batteries are replaced when they reach 70-80% of their initial capacity. Most still have enough remaining useful life for second use applications, which are underexploited today. While it is assumed that the overall life cycle environmental impact of second use batteries will be lower than first use batteries in energy storage applications, a full-scale quantification of these impacts within the Norwegian battery value chain, has not yet been carried out. New policy recommendations will also be needed to incentivise sustainable behaviour in the battery value chain.

The Electric Agder (ELAG) project will develop competences within the Agder region to support local companies in creating sustainable value based EV battery re-use and subsequent recycling strategies to push battery value chains into circularity and to promote electrification through energy storage technology development.

This research assistant position is looking for a candidate who can help with a battery value chain sustainability assessment. Specific task for this position can include:

  • Identifying where emissions reductions can be made in the Norwegian battery value chain by carrying out life cycle assessment studies.
  • Determining suitable business strategies and economic incentives to incorporate battery reuse and recycling into a circular battery value chain
  • Drafting policy recommendations for improved circularity within the battery value chain to induce circularity among Norwegian actors through procurement, regulation, and economic incentives

The candidate’s tasks include literature studies, system modelling and optimization, and experimental tests and hardware development.

Required qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in (or equivalent) in industrial economics, circular economy, sustainable business management, industrial ecology, renewable energy or a closely related field. This year’s candidates/candidates who are in the closing stages of their bachelor or master’s degree can also apply.
  • Interest in battery technology and sustainability
  • Written and spoken competency in English

Further provisions relating to the positions as PhD Research Fellows can be found in the Regulations Concerning Terms and Conditions of Employment for the post of Post-Doctoral Research Fellow, Research Fellow, Research Assistant and Resident .

Desired qualifications
  • Master’s degree in (or equivalent) in renewable energy, battery engineering, industrial ecology, industrial economics, circular economy, sustainable business or a closely related field.
  • Experience with batteries and battery systems
  • Familiarity with Norwegian and/or European battery policy and regulations
  • Experience with life cycle assessment (LCA) and circular economy
  • Written and spoken competency in a Scandinavian language
