Research Assistant in Informatics – up to 4 positions

There is a vacancy for up to 4 positions as Research Assistants in code 1019 or 1020 in 30 % positions at the Department of Informatics . The positions are for a fixed-term period of 24 months and are financed by the RCN projects AUTOPROVING and SYMBOALGO.



About the project/work tasks

As a research assistant you will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • 1) Implementation of algorithms for combinatorial problems.
  • 2) Experimental evaluation of the implemented algorithms.
  • 3) Writing reports describing technical details of implemented algorithms, eventual            implementation details and experimental results.
  • 4) Participation in research activities, such as reading scientific papers, presenting results in            seminars, workshops, etc.

Your work will be split into a sequence of milestones to be agreed on during the execution of the project. You will be working independently towards the completion of each milestone and will have a lot of flexibility in organizing your schedule, respecting the completion of milestones by the deadlines agreed upon. The position is compatible with remote work within Norway.



Qualifications and personal qualities
  • To qualify for the position Research Assistant 1019: Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent education in Informatics, Mathematics, or another relevant discipline.
  • To qualify for the position as Research Assistant 1020: Applicants must hold a master's degree in informatics, Mathematics, or another relevant discipline.

Required Documented Expertise:

  • You must have excellent programming skills either in C++ or in Python.
  • You musthave strong experience in at least one of the following areas:
    • 1) Implementation of algorithms for combinatorial problems, or
    • 2) design of optimization models using SAT solvers, linear programming tools, or
    • 3) implementation of machine learning models using state of the art libraries such as Tensor flow, Keras, etc.
  • You must have strong proficiency in both written and oral English.

Advantageous Requirements

  • Good results in programming competitions or mathematics competitions is an advantage.
  • Publication in international conferences within algorithms/combinatorics is an advantage.
  • Excellent grades on relevant courses related to algorithms is an advantage.
  • Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized, e.g. the ability to work independently and in a structured manner and to demonstrate good collaborative and communicative skills.
  • Ambition and potential for academic achievement will count in the assessment of the candidates, as well as interest and enthusiasm for academic work.

 

Special requirements for the position

The University of Bergen is subjected to the regulation for export control system. The regulation will be applied in the processing of the applications.

  • Salary at pay grade 35 (in code 1019) in the state salary scale. This currently amounts to an annual salary of NOK 414 200 before taxes. For applicants holding a master’s degree and qualifying for the position code 1020 we can offer pay grade 42 in the state salary scale. This currently amounts to an annual salary of NOK 448 900 before taxes. Further promotions are made according to qualifications and length of service in the position.
