Job description

The University of Stavanger has a vacant position as a professor in health promotion and preventive work, at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Public Health. Joining on 1 August 2024 or by agreement.

The subject area for the position is interdisciplinary health promotion and preventive work related to public health challenges in the population, preferably in children, young people and/or the elderly/other risk-exposed groups.

The subject are for the position is built on insights and knowledge from various disciplines, such as health sciences, social sciences, public health sciences, etc., and takes a starting point in an interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral approach to health.

The position has an organizational connection to the Department of Public Health  and will particularly contribute to strengthening and complementing the professional environment associated with the Master of Health Sciences specialization in public health. Close collaboration with and teaching at other study programs is also relevant.

The hired candidate will conduct research and disseminate research results within relevant research areas at the department, and contribute to the development of partnerships with businesses. It is expected that the hired candidate initiates, provides external funding to, leads and conducts major research and development projects. The Professor will also lead the development and use of digital and diverse learning methods, innovation, value creation based on results from research and academic work.

Qualification requirements

We are seeking a Professor with a high level of scientific expertise in accordance with established professorship standards within the subject area and the university's general criteria for employment as a professor. 

Two positions have been announced within the field, one for a professor and one for an associate professor. In the evaluation of qualified candidates for these positions, emphasis will be placed on strengthening the academic community in the field of health promotion and preventive work, both among children and youth and among the elderly or other vulnerable groups

You must have a background in interdisciplinary health promotion and preventive work, preferably with children, young people and/or the elderly/other risk-exposed groups.

You must be able to document active, ongoing research at a high academic level and have the potential for future high-level research within the subject area.

We put emphasis on the quality, relevance and significance of the research work and not on where the work is published, in accordance with the principles of The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA).

Research experience from a municipal service context (at individual, group and/or community level), interventions and implementation is desired, but not a requirement.

It is expected that you have a reflective and conscientious attitude towards your own teaching and supervision. You must be able to document quality development in teaching and supervision, broad supervisory experience (preferably at master's and doctoral level) and participation in the development of educational quality in the academic community.

Furthermore, you must be able to document pedagogical and didactic skills relating to higher education, and basic skills in planning, evaluation and development of teaching and supervision. If you do not meet the competence requirement, the university may consider to offer employment with a requirement to complete a university pedagogy course within a period of two years from employment. The course will be provided by the university.

Norwegian is the language mainly used at UiS. The working and teaching languages are Norwegian and English. It is expected that you can teach and supervise in Norwegian (equivalent to level B2), or another Scandinavian language, within a period of three years from accession. If required, you will be offered a Norwegian course paid for by the university.

In the absence of applicants with sufficient scientific expertise, the university may consider temporarily employment for up to three years, during which time he/she will endeavour to gain the qualifications necessary for a permanent position. You must be considered capable of gaining the necessary qualifications during the period of employment.

  • contributed to the use of research-based knowledge in society and that you can refer to results from innovation and the commercialisation of research
  • experience with relevant international research networks and the ability to build and nurture networks—regionally, nationally and internationally
  • ability to manage a heavy workload, inquisitiveness, and motivation to the development of academic and interdisciplinary collaboration at the university
  • good teamwork and communication skills, and ability to contribute to a constructive work environment

The Faculty of Health Sciences offers bachelor’s programmes in Nursing and Paramedic, master’s programmes in Health Sciences with specializations in Public Health Nursing, in Midwifery, in Drug Abuse and Mental Health, in Prehospital Services and in Nursing with specializations in Anesthesia, Intensive Care or Surgical Nursing, and a continuing education programme in Cancer Nursing. The faculty further offers research education (PhD) in Health and Medicine and the research school PROFRES – National Research School for Professions-Oriented and Practice-Relevant Research in the fields of Health, Welfare and Education. The Faculty of Health Sciences has the following main research areas: Professional Relations in Welfare Professions, Health Promotion in Chronic Ailments, E-learning, Health Technology and Simulation, Life Phenomena and Caring, and Participation in School and Work. The research centre SHARE – Centre for Resilience in Health Care are also part of the faculty. There are currently 250 employees including students and postdocs, and 1,400 students at The Faculty of Health Sciences.

The department´s main objective is to contribute to the prevention of acute and chronic health problems and increase participation in school and work, by disability prevention strategies. Our focus is empowerment and self-management of illness. There are currently 55 employees, including research fellows at the departement. Department competence covers the development of knowledge on effects for better health and increased participation, cost-benefit analysis on societal- and group levels, and how services are experienced by the individual. The department performs interdisciplinary health research, but also welfare- and health service research.
