About the job

Sustainable Digital Transformation (or Twin Transition) is an important area for research and
education focusing on the impact of technology-driven innovation on society, economy, and the
environment. Responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a pillar for Sustainable Digital Transformation
that consists of developing, using, and governing AI in a way that adheres to fundamental human
values. We seek candidates with knowledge, interest and research contributions to studies of digital
technologies (including AI) from a sociotechnical perspective.

The Department of Computer Science has a growing focus on Responsible AI as part of strategic
initiatives such as NorwAI (Norwegian Center for AI Innovation, https://www.ntnu.edu/norwai ), the
Norwegian Open AI Lab (NAIL, https://www.ntnu.edu/ailab ), CESICT (Center for Sustainable ICT;
https://www.ntnu.edu/web/cesict/center-for-sustainable-ict ), NTNU’s Energy Hub initiative
(https://www.ntnu.edu/ept/ntnu-energy-hub ), BRU21 (Better Resource Utilization in the Energy
sector, https://www.ntnu.edu/bru21 ), and several national and international projects.

This position relates specifically to strengthening our department’s research and education activities
in relation to the energy sector which is currently undergoing a Digital Transformation in its quest for
more sustainable energy sources. The position is sponsored by Equinor as part of a university
collaboration scheme.

The position will be affiliated with NAIL. We will through this position seek strong collaborations with
relevant departments, including the Department of Electric Energy and the Department of
Engineering Cybernetics.

Your immediate leader is Head of Data and Artificial Intelligence group (DART).


Duties of the position

The professor/ associate professor will be a regular member of the department’s scientific staff, with privileges and duties following from that, including teaching and student supervision. The responsibilities include the following:

  • Contribute towards research and research-based education in Sustainable Digital Transformation with a focus on Responsible AI.
  • Contribute towards research activities on Responsible AI in different empirical contexts, especially within the energy sector.
  • Contribute to developing new projects in the relevant domain.
  • Contribute to administrative tasks such as hiring committees, educational and research boards, etc., at the department of Computer Science.
  • Contribute to an excellent learning environment in collaboration with colleagues, students, and external stakeholders.
  • Teach Computer Science courses at all levels, including basic AI and Machine Learning (ML) courses, and supervise masters and Doctoral students.
  • Disseminate relevant parts of the research to a wider audience.

Required qualifications 

Professor: 

You must have the qualifications required for the position of Professor in the field of Computer Science/Informatics or directly related area, as outlined in § 1-2 of the regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts 

  • Your scientific experience must be primarily in the study of digital technology with a strong focus on AI in different empirical settings.
  • Documented experience in teaching and researching digital technology and AI.
  • Peer-reviewed publications in top venues within relevant areas.

In addition to the requirements for basic educational competence, you must also document:

  • The development of the quality of your own teaching and supervision of students over time
  • Broad experience as a supervisor, preferably at a master’s/PhD level
  • Participation in improving the quality of education in a professional environment

Associate professor: 

You must have the qualifications required for the position of Associate Professor in the field of Computer Science or directly related area, as outlined in the regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts 

  • Your PhD, or comparable academic work, must be within the field of Computer Science/Informatics with significant connections to AI. If you can document that the PhD thesis has been submitted, your application can be assessed even if you have not yet defended your dissertation. Documentation of the doctoral degree obtained must be presented before you can take up the position. We will prioritise candidates with academic work on the impact of AI-based information systems.

Desired requirements:

  • Research experience within inter-disciplinary areas of digital technology with a strong focus on AI.
  • Peer-reviewed publications in top venues within relevant areas.

Applicable to all:  

You must document relevant basic competence in teaching and supervision at a university/higher education-level, as referenced in the Norwegian national Regulations . If this cannot be documented, you will be required to complete an approved course in university pedagogy within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses. 

New employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language by appointment is required, within three years, to demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three of the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU .

Salary and conditions

In the position as an Associate Professor / Professor (code 1011 /1013), you will be paid according to agreement in the salary policy and will depend on qualifications and seniority. As required by law, 2% of this salary will be deducted and paid into the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants,  and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.   

After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work. 

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education and research, experience and personal and interpersonal qualities. Motivation, ambitions, and potential will also count in the assessment of the candidates. Our assessment of the pedagogical skills will be based on documented pedagogical material, forms of presentation in your academic works, teaching experience, PhD, and Masters supervision, and any other relevant pedagogical background. Both quality and scope will be taken into consideration, and an open scientific practice will be recognized.

NTNU is obliged by the evaluation criteria for research quality in accordance with The San Fransisco Declaration on Research Assessment – DORA  and The obligations in the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment ( CoARA)  on responsible assessment of research and recognition of a  wider range of academic contributions to science and society. This means that we will pay particular attention to the quality and academic range demonstrated by your scientific work to date. We will also pay attention to research leadership and participation in research projects. Your scientific work from the last five years will be given the most weight.
