Postdoctoral Research Fellow position

There is a vacancy for a postdoc position in wind energy meteorology at the Geophysical Institute, University of Bergen. The announced position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years and is a part of the externally financed project ImpactWind Sørvest, funded by the Research Council of Norway (RCN) under project number 332034.

About the project/work tasks

The realization of the ambitious goals for offshore wind energy deployments, both internationally and here in Norway, requires a fast, coordinated and highly interdisciplinary approach to provide the research-based knowledge for an efficient and streamlined licensing and design of future offshore wind farms in Norwegian waters. ImpactWind Sørvest brings together one regional research institute, three regional universities, four business clusters, two national industry associations and seven license applicants in an interdisciplinary capacity boost aimed at the license application processes. Ten specific knowledge gaps have been identified based on dialogue with business clusters, industry associations and relevant industry partners, and the project consortium's professional knowledge: 1) Impacts on the marine environment. 2) Spatial competition. 3) Circular designs. 4) Cost efficiency and optimization of working conditions for personnel. 5) Social acceptance. 6) Employment development. 7) Climate impact on wind resources, micro-climate, and legal issues. 8) Climate consequences for development and operation. 9) Risk and consequences of accidents. 10) Standards for ongoing monitoring of the environment and facilities. The successful applicant will mainly work towards “Climate impact on wind resources and micro-climate” from topic 7 listed above, but is also expected to contribute where met-ocean competence and information is required in the other tasks. The focus of this postdoctoral position is dedicated to meteorological aspects of future offshore wind energy deployments, covering a wide range of temporal and spatial scales.

The successful candidate will investigate potential changes in wind resources in a future climate, the potential effects of operational wind farms on the met-ocean environment, and the effect of wind farm wakes on neighbouring wind farms. On the latter, a close collaboration is envisaged with the parallel PostDoc position on corresponding legal issues, announced by the Faculty of Law at UiB.

Further the work will involve the development of educational material within offshore wind energy to be used in master courses as well as continued education. The position is also expected to contribute in teaching and supervision of students in our study programmes in energy and in the organization of a summer school. The successful candidate will be a member of the Bergen Offshore Wind Centre according to own interests and research plan and is highly encouraged to involve in relevant research projects associated with the centre.
