Postdoctoral Research Fellow position within middle atmosphere physics modelling

At the Department of Physics and Technology , there is a vacancy for a postdoctoral research fellow position within middle atmosphere physics modelling. The position is for a fixed term of 3 years and is associated with the project “GEAEC: Gamma-ray-glow Effects on Atmospheric Electricity and Chemistry”, financed by the Norwegian Research Council.

About the project/work tasks:

The objective of this project is to understand the role of thunderstorm gamma-ray glows (GRG) in the chemistry of the Earth's atmosphere and in the global electrical environment.

The objective of this project may be achieved by answering the following research questions:

  • What is the mechanism of gamma-ray glow (GRG) generation in thunderstorms? How to quantify their intensity and spectrum based on thunderstorm properties?
  • Do GRG contribute significantly to changes in stratospheric chemistry and the dynamics of the ozone layer?
  • Do GRG contribute significantly to creation of stratospheric aerosols?
  • Do GRG significantly modify the global electric circuit?

The postdoctoral research fellow will develop numerical codes needed for the project, in particular, the aerosol dynamics code, and will help other team members with development of other codes. The fellow will also perform theoretical studies of the GRG, such as the numerical analysis of GRG effects on the ozone layer.

Qualifications and personal qualities:
  • Applicants must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree in Physics or similar field or must have submitted his/her doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
  • Applicants must have good theoretical background in atmosphere physics and be willing to specialize on the dynamics of aerosol growth
  • Applicants must have some expertise in numerical methods.
  • It is a strong advantage with relevant experience in code development.
  • It is an advantage with experience with
    • numerical modelling of electromagnetic fields
    • Monte Carlo or PIC modelling of particles
    • modelling of atmospheric chemistry or aerosols
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and have the ability to cooperate with others.
  • Applicants must have excellent skills in oral and written English.

Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.

Special requirements for the position
The University of Bergen is subjected to the regulation for export control system. The regulation will be applied in the processing of the applications.

Teaching and other duties will in such cases be added to the position. The position may be extended by up to one year (maximum 4 years in total) if the appointee is granted externally financed research stays abroad.

Individuals may not be hired for more than one fixed-term period as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same institution. In accordance with the Research Council’s rules, neither can anyone be hired more than once as an NFR-financed postdoctoral research fellow.

For postdoctoral research fellow positions associated with externally financed projects, the completion of the project proposal for the qualifying work, as well as a progress plan, will be developed in cooperation with the supervisor and head of department.

It is a requirement that the project is completed in the course of the period of employment.
