Job description / Project description / Development plan:

Noninvasive imaging of tissue fibrosis and stiffness is desirable for many organ systems, such as in the lungs, liver, breast, and the heart. Half of all heart failure patients suffer from stiffening of the myocardium, where myocardial fibrosis is the most likely culprit. Unfortunately, the interplay between fibrosis and stiffness is not fully understood. This hampers development of specific treatment of this type of heart failure.

In this project, we will implement and optimize novel medical imaging tools for assessment of heart fibrosis and stiffness and bridge the gap between cardiac fibrosis and stiffness. This may lead to improved diagnosis, treatment, and prevention strategies.

We are offering a postdoctoral position to join our team in studying this key issue. We are looking for a candidate with experience with magnetic resonance imaging, material science, or continuum mechanics. The research will focus on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) of the heart. MRI offers unique opportunities for assessing in vivo tissue properties, and a part of this project will be to further develop noninvasive quantification of cardiac fibrosis. Furthermore, MRE is a technique in which mechanical properties of the heart tissue are measured non-invasively. However, the establishment and validation of cardiac MRE pose significant challenges, including protocol development, experiment setup, and image reconstruction.

In this project, our primary objective is to thoroughly characterize the properties of the heart tissue using MRI and MRE, ultimately advancing our understanding of the mechanics of heart function and the impact of myocardial fibrosis.

Your main responsibilities will include:

• Further develop the MRI and MRE protocols, including the practical experimental setup, pulse sequence design, and image reconstruction.
• Participate in the acquisition and processing of images of the subjects in the study.
• Participate in development of novel MRE reconstruction methods for increasing both accuracy and computational efficiency.

The position is associated with the FibroPET Convergence Environment at UiO:Life Science.  Convergence environments are interdisciplinary research groups that will aim to solve grand challenges related to health and environment. They are funded by UiO's interdisciplinary strategic area UiO:Life Science www.uio.no/life-science .

The candidate will work in close collaboration with researchers at Section for Biophysics and Medical Physics (Department of Physics, UiO), Institute for Experimental Medical Research and The Intervention Centre (both Department of Medicine, UiO).

The main purpose of a postdoctoral fellowship is to provide the candidates with enhanced skills to pursue a scientific top position within or beyond academia. To promote a strategic career path, all postdoctoral research fellows are required to submit a professional development plan no later than one month after commencement of the postdoctoral period.

Qualification requirements:

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition to be among Europe’s leading communities for research, education and innovation. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

Required qualifications:

• Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in a field relevant for the project, for instance medical imaging, material science, continuum mechanics, biomedical engineering or similar. Doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the closing date. Only applicants with an approved doctoral thesis and defense are eligible for appointment.
• Strong computer programming skills.
• High-level oral and written English skills.

Desired qualifications:

• Experience with magnetic resonance imaging.
• Experience with measurements on and/or simulations of viscoelastic materials.
• Programming skills in Python, Matlab or similar.
• A strong publication record.

Personal skills:

• Good social and collaboration skills.
• Can collaborate with professionals from diverse backgrounds.
• An ability to work independently and show self-motivation.
• Has mindset of problem solving.
