Offer Description
The position

A Postdoctoral Research Fellow position is available at the Faculty of Science and Technology  from 01.05.2023. The workplace will be at UiT-The Arctic University of Norway, campus Tromsø, at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics  and the position is attached to the research group in pure mathematics within this department.

The position is a fixed term position for a duration of three years. Appointment to the position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow is mainly intended to provide qualification for work in top academic positions. It is a prerequisite that the applicant can carry out the project over the full course of the employment period. No person may hold more than one fixed term position as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the same institution.

The position will additionally be assigned to teaching and related work for UiT in an amount equivalent to a maximum 25 % of a full-time employment. 

 You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time after receiving the offer.

The position’s affiliation

The Faculty of Science and Technology consists of the following departments: Department of Chemistry, Department of Computer Science, Department of Engineering and Safety, Department of Geology, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and Department of Physics and Technology.

There are 19 permanent scientific positions at the department. At the moment there are 20 PhD positions and 8 post-doctoral positions at the department.

The position's field of research

The position will be attached to the Lie-Størmer Center  for fundamental structures in computational and pure mathematics. The main focus of research will be around round mathematical structures that are fundamental for efficient computations, exploring symmetry, order and geometric structures. Research at LSC is exploring deep relationships between mathematical theory, and efficient computational algorithms represented in software.  The research area of the successful candidate should integrate into the research themes of the Lie-Størmer Center, described on the webpage.

The applicant is asked to include a project proposal (max 5 pages). This proposal should draw connections to activities in the Lie-Størmer Center. The proposal must include a progress plan.

Qualifications

This position requires a Norwegian doctoral degree (PhD) in the subject area concerned or a corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree.

The successful candidate for this position will ideally have a background strong background in one or several of the following topics:

• Algorithmic (real) algebraic geometry,
• algebra and combinatorics,
• combinatorial optimization,
• algebraic statistics, complexity theory,
• geometric numerical integration,
• stochastic DEs and PDEs,
• rough paths and regularity structures,
• applied differential geometry,
• foundational aspects of computational mathematics
• and mathematical software.  

However, we will consider any application that shows connections to the research themes at the Lie-Størmer Center.

Qualification with a PhD is required before commencement in the position. If you’re at the final stages of your PhD, you may still apply if you have submitted your PhD thesis for doctoral degree evaluation within the application deadline. You must submit the thesis with your application. You must have dissertated before the start-up date of the position.

Fluency in English is required. Nordic applicants can document their capabilities by attaching their high school diploma.

In the assessment the main emphasis will be attached to the submitted works and the project proposal for the qualifying work. Emphasis shall also be attached to experience from popularization/dissemination and academic policy and administrative activity.

As teaching duties or equivalent work is attached to the position, emphasis will also be attached to teaching experience and qualifications. A trial lecture may also be held.

During the assessment emphasis will be put on the candidate’s motivation, potential for research, and personal suitability for the position. We are looking for candidates who:

The applicant may submit up to 5 works that are central to his/her production.

In addition, the applicant shall provide a description of his/her scientific production stating which works he/she considers the most important and shall therefore be the main emphasis of the assessment. A brief description of the other listed works shall also be included to demonstrate depth of production. These descriptions shall be an attachment to the application.

Assessment

The applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. The committee's mandate is to undertake an assessment of the applicants' qualifications based on the written material presented by the applicants, and the detailed description draw up for the position.

The applicants who are assessed as best qualified will be called to an interview. The interview should among other things, aim to clarify the applicant’s motivation and personal suitability for the position. A trial lecture may also be held.

The remuneration for Postdoctoral research fellow is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1352.
