Postdoctoral Research Fellow position

We are looking for an ambitious researcher who will be developing and strengthening the research and teaching within the area of investigative journalism. The postdoctoral fellow will be affiliated with the Journalism Research Group and mainly have teaching assignments at the Department’s bachelor's and master's programs in journalism. The position is four years and 25% of the time is allocated for teaching and administrative duties. The workplace is the Department’s premises in Media City Bergen.

Journalism is a central research and teaching area in the Department. Investigative journalism has been a strategic priority within journalism, and in 2016 the Department established a master’s program in investigative journalism and Center for Investigative Journalism (SUJO). SUJO has extensive collaboration with leading editorial media in Norway and organizes an experience-based master's in investigative journalism. In Media City Bergen, the Department also hosts MediaFutures: Research Centre for Responsible Media Technology & Innovation.

About the project/work tasks:

The call is open to all types of projects within the area of investigative journalism. A possible research topic can for example be whether and how digital technology changes the conditions and practice of investigative journalism. Other examples of themes are methods and work practices in investigative journalism; Power relationships in investigative journalism; Ethical and professional ideological perspectives; Investigative journalists in the journalistic field; and investigative journalism outside the news institution. The list is only examples and not exhaustive.

Applicants must submit a project plan of 4-5 pages. The plan must outline the theme and research questions as well as the project’s contributions to the field of research.

The postdoctoral fellow will work in a dynamic, interdisciplinary, and inclusive academic and professional environment. The Department’s premises in Media City Bergen are co-located with leading national news media and an internationally oriented media technology environment.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

• Applicants must have obtained a PhD degree or equivalent in journalism, media science, information science, or other relevant disciplines - or have submitted the doctoral dissertation for assessment by the deadline for applications. It is a prerequisite that the doctoral degree is obtained before adding can take place.
• Documented knowledge of research on investigative journalism.
• Experience in journalistic practice is an advantage.
• Ability to work independently and structured.
• Ability to contribute to a dynamic and inclusive research environment.
• Fluent in English written and oral.

Potential candidates may be invited to the department for an interview and might be asked to hold a trial lecture in a given topic.

The successful candidate is expected to live and work in Bergen and participate in common activities at the Department.

About the position of postdoctoral research fellow:

The position of postdoctoral research fellow is a fixed-term appointment with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. The fixed-term period for this position is 4 year(s). Individuals may not be hired for more than one fixed-term period as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same institution.

A research proposal of 4-5 pages must accompany the application. The proposal should contain a progress plan for the different parts of the research work, as well as a plan regarding publishing.  It is a requirement that the project is completed in the course of the period of employment.

A budget must be set up for operating expenses.

• Gross annual salary as Postdoctoral research fellow, code 1352, of NOK 615 700 (pay grade 63 according to the state salary scale). Further increase in salary will depend on seniority. A higher salary may be considered for a particularly well qualified applicant.
