The Department of Linguistic, Literary and Aesthetic Studies invites applications for 2 postdoctoral positions in digital culture, starting 01.09.2024 or as agreed. The positions are for a fixed-term period of three years.


About the Department of Linguistic, Literary and Aesthetic Studies (LLE)

The department employs an academic staff of 80, administrative staff of 15, and about 40 ph.d. fellows and postdocs. We offer study programs in Art History, Classical philology, Comparative Literature, Digital Culture, Linguistics, Norwegian as a Secondary Language, Old Norse Philology, Scandinavian Studies, Theatre Studies and Norwegian language courses for international students and employees at the University of Bergen. LLE is also the proud host for the Norwegian Center of Research Excellence Center for Digital Narrative (CDN), and responsible for three of the most important dictionaries of the Norwegian language.


About the project

The project “Algorithmic folklore: The mutual shaping of vernacular creativity and automation” (ALGOFOLK) is funded by the Trond Mohn Foundation, PI: Gabriele de Seta. The project studies how algorithms are changing the relationship between creativity and automation across the globe, using a combination of ethnographic research and digital humanities methods. About the postdoctoral position

The position as postdoctoral research fellow is a fixed-term appointment for three years, with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. The successful applicant shall prepare a plan for qualifying for top academic positions in cooperation with the Head of Department.
It is a requirement that the postdoctoral project is completed during the period of employment.


Candidates cannot be employed as a postdoctoral fellow for more than one fixed term period at the same institution. The successful applicant will be expected to conform to the regulations that apply to the position and must accept that their primary residence will be in Bergen for the full term of the appointment.  


Qualifications and personal qualities
  • The applicant must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent foreign degree in Digital Culture, Digital Humanities or a related field with a specialization in algorithmic culture or similar topics, and demonstrated experience working with qualitative research methods, or in Media Studies, Anthropology, Sociology, Cultural Studies or a related field with specialization in digital media and demonstrated experience in working with ethnographic methods. The doctoral dissertation must have been submitted for evaluation within the closing date of the application. The PhD degree must be obtained prior to appointment.
  • The applicant must provide a project proposal (max. 5 pages) aligned with the goals of the ALGOFOLK project, that is, using digital humanities and social science methodologies to study the relationship between algorithmic automation and vernacular creativity in a global context, with a particular emphasis on both EU and Global South contexts. The proposal should include a progress plan for the project’s main activities, and a plan for publishing results in recognized international channels.
  • The applicant must be able to work independently in a well-structured way and have good cooperation skills.
  • The applicant must be proficient in both written and oral English.

In assessing the applications, the academic quality and feasibility of the proposed project, the relevance to the project and regional representation within the ALGOFOLK-project, and the academic qualifications of the candidate will be considered.

In cases where applicants have approximately equivalent qualifications, strategic considerations, motivation, and the applicant's personal eligibility will be considered.

  • Relevant certificates/references.  
  • The names and contact information for two reference persons. One of these must be the main supervisor for the PhD thesis.
