Postdoctoral Research Fellow (2 positions)

Two (2) open positions as postdoctoral research fellow are available at the Faculty of Medicine for a period of three (3) years (full-time), starting 1st of September 2024.

The postdoctoral research fellow may be assigned required duties at the department or at the faculty. Such duties can be teaching, exam work or supervision, depending on the needs of the department or the faculty, or be connected to the Medical Student Research Program, or the basic course (MEDMET) for PhD candidates. The teaching language is usually Norwegian, but English at PhD level.

The positions will be placed at the relevant department, depending on the project, and the place of work shall primarily be at the faculty in Norway. For the application to be processed, the candidate must be affiliated with a different research environment than during their PhD.

Part-time 50 % position:

It is possible to combine a part-time (50 %) postdoctoral fellowship with other relevant work, also part-time (50 %). The total employment period for the combined positions is six (6) years, maximum. Please indicate this in the application and note that both employers must approve a part-time solution before the starting date.


Evaluation of applicants:

Applicants are evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Applicant: The applicant’s competence and relevant professional activity. A planned stay abroad in the post-doctoral period will be valued positively.
  • Project: The scientific value of the project, in addition to its feasibility within the framework of a postdoctoral fellowship.
  • Research environment: The research environment’s ability to develop the candidate, relevant research activity. The mentor must be employed at the Faculty of Medicine throughout the postdoctoral employment period.

Qualifications and personal qualities:
  • The applicant must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree, or have the doctoral thesis submitted prior to the application deadline. It is a condition for appointment that the public defence is completed, and the degree is approved before appointment.
  • Proficiency in both written and oral English

About the position of postdoctoral research fellow:

The position of postdoctoral research fellow is a fixed-term appointment with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. You cannot be employed as a postdoctoral fellow for more than one fixed term period at the same institution.

The fixed term period for the position is three years, with the possibility for an extension of the period up to four years if a research stay abroad shall be included in the employment period.

The research stay abroad must be for more than six months, and may be for more than one year, but the total employment period cannot exceed four years. The research stay abroad must be completed at least 6 months before the end of the employment period.

 


The position may be assigned required duties at the department/faculty.

The mentor must hold a permanent position in at least 50 % at The Faculty of Medicine. Exceptions can be made for persons in part-time position at the faculty, who holds a full-time position in Helse Vest, in NORCE or in the primary health service in Western Norway.

The application letter must state the applicant's motivation for the postdoctoral project and a future scientific career, and it must contain a plan for career development.

4. List of publications and scientific work (PDF) with a brief overview of content and your own contribution for each of these.

5. Witnessed (certified) transcripts, diplomas, certificates and attestations (in PDF). If you have not yet defended your thesis, please attach a confirmation of the approval of the thesis.

From the mentor:

1. Mentor statement explaining the applicant’s potential for an academic career, and how the mentor and the research group can facilitate the candidate’s development as an independent researcher, aiming for an academic career. Please note that only one application from each mentor will be considered.

2. The mentor’s CV (max 3 pages). Use the template found here.

3. Mentor’s supervision experience (master and PhD level). This document should also include an overview of the names, start dates and expected leave dates for PhDs and postdoctoral fellows currently supervised by the mentor (both as main supervisor and co-supervisor). If you are not currently a supervise/mentor, include a sentence stating this. Please see the guidelines for number of University of Bergen funded candidates that can be supervised/mentored by the same person.
