About the job

A Postdoctoral Fellow  position is available at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at NTNU Norwegian University of Science and Technology. We are seeking highly motivated candidates to join our team to work on solid-state Li batteries in the frame of an industry funded project. The postdoctoral fellowship position is a temporary position where the main goal is to qualify for work in senior academic positions.

The available position is affiliated with the Functional Materials and Materials Chemistry research group (FACET)  (https://www.ntnu.edu/ima/research/facet ), Department of Materials Science and Engineering, NTNU Norwegian University for Science and Technology.

Research activities in the department cover functional materials and materials chemistry, nanomaterials, ceramics, electrochemical energy technology, corrosion, physical metallurgy, and metallurgical and electrochemical process engineering.

You will report to Professor Dr. Daniel Rettenwander

Duties of the position

  • Conduct materials and electrochemical battery research, with a specific focus on engineering the tortuosity of composite cathodes in solid-state batteries.
  • Chemically and microstructurally engineer, integrate, and test various combinations of state-of-the-art solid electrolytes and cathode materials in solid-state batteries.
  • Perform characterization by utilizing a wide spectrum of characterization tools, such as Plasma FIB SEM, TOF-SIMS, TEM, etc.

Required selection criteria

  • Completed a Norwegian doctoral degree or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, Physics, Materials Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Strong academic background from previous studies.
  • Strong background in the synthesis, processing, and characterization of materials.
  • Good written and oral English language and communication skills. 

The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Ph.D Candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate.

Preferred selection criteria

  • Documented experience at PhD level in Li-ion and beyond Li-ion battery research. Experience in solid-state battery research is a plus.
  • Educational background which preferably includes hands-on experience with methods for characterization of materials structure, microstructure and electrochemical properties.
  • Knowledge of a Scandinavian language is considered as a plus.

  • Creative, with a strong ability to work goal-oriented and independently.
  • Good skills to deliver oral and written presentations of research results.
  • He/she should also enjoy interdisciplinary research and take keen interest in working in project teams.
  • Ability to communicate ideas, engage in discussion and passion for research area.

Salary and conditions

As a Postdoctoral Fellow (code 1352) you are normally paid from gross NOK  594 500 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 2 years.

Preferred start-up: August 2024.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants , and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.  

After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The position is subject to external funding.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.
