About the project

At the Department of Sociology and Political Science (ISS), NTNU Trondheim there is a vacant temporary position as Postdoctoral Fellow with the European Research Council funded LEGACIES project for a period of two years. The LEGACIES project  aims to understand how historical states affect conflict and democratization in the modern world, including understanding the dynamics of historical states and international systems (especially non-western states and systems), and analyzing their impact on civil war, nonviolent protest, democratization or other relevant dimensions of institutions and dissent. More information about the LEGACIES project can be found here . The position is connected to the Department’s research group on “Instability and Armed Conflict ” and the successful candidate will also be a member of the research group.

About the job

The postdoctoral fellowship position is a temporary position where the main goal is to qualify for work in senior academic positions. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to contribute to the overall objectives of the LEGACIES project by producing research work in this area, actively contributing to the analysis and management of data, and contributing to the production and publication of research work associated with the LEGACIES project. Candidates with a strong substantive background in comparative politics, peace and conflict studies, and/or international relations and a strong background and training in quantitative research methods and data management, potentially including the analysis of spatial data, will be considered advantageous.  

Your immediate leader is Head of Department.

You will report to the project leader (Prof. Charles Butcher) and the Head of Department (Prof. Johan Fredrik Rye).

Duties of the position

• Produce and publish high-quality research, including joint and single-authored publications where appropriate, in the areas associated with the LEGACIES project.
• Contribute to the core data collection, management, and analysis in the LEGACIES project.
• Be an active member of the LEGACIES research team, joining regular meetings and events, contributing to group discussions, and assisting with organization of the project and related events where appropriate.

Required selection criteria

• You must have completed a Norwegian doctoral degree or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian PhD in a relevant field (political science, international relations, sociology, peace and conflict studies). Candidates who are in the final stages of their PhD project will be assessed, but must attach a document that confirms that their doctoral thesis has been submitted or documentation from the institution that confirms when the defense is scheduled to take place. If you are offered the position, you need to provide documentation for completion of the PhD degree before starting the position.
• Demonstrated knowledge of and background in empirical, inferential research methods.
• A research background and direction fitting within the core interests of the LEGACIES project.
• Fluent communications skills in English, both written and oral.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Ph.D Candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate.

Preferred selection criteria

• A strong publication record within the key substantive areas of the LEGACIES project (democratization, peace and conflict studies, historical international relations, studies of contention and dissent).
• Advanced skills in quantitative research methods for observational data and data management, potentially including the analysis of spatial data.

Salary and conditions

As a Postdoctoral Fellow (code 1352) you are normally paid from gross NOK 594 500 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund

The period of employment is two years.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants , and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.  

After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The position is subject to external funding.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.

• A cover letter outlining the candidate’s suitability for the position and broad research plan for the postdoctoral period.

Joint works will be considered. If it is difficult to identify your contribution to joint works, you must attach a brief description of your participation.

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal and interpersonal qualities. Motivation, ambitions, and potential will also count in the assessment of the candidates.
