Offer Description
This is NTNU

NTNU is a broad-based university with a technical-scientific profile and a focus in professional education. The university is located in three cities with headquarters in Trondheim.

At NTNU, 9,000 employees and 43,000 students work to create knowledge for a better world.

You can find more information about working at NTNU and the application process here .

About the job

The postdoctoral fellowship position is a temporary position where the main goal is to qualify for work in senior academic positions. This position additionally provides an opportunity to cooperate with the Norwegian hydropower industry.

We have a vacancy for a two-year position as a Postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Trondheim, Norway. The position is devoted to research in the field of civil engineering with focus on upstream erosion protection on embankment dams, as well as environmental loads such as ice, wind and waves on reservoirs.

The work will be conducted as a part of the project InMoDam, (Innovative monitoring and modelling of loads and damage processes on embankment dams), which is an innovation project for the industrial sector, funded by The Research Council of Norway and industrial partners in the project.

The main idea of the InMoDam project is to provide improved methodologies for the management of riprap slope protection on the upstream face of existing embankment dams to resist wave and ice loads and reduce the need for rehabilitation.  The research includes development of methodologies for wave load prediction from wind and wave measurements on reservoirs, prediction of performance of riprap on the upstream embankment dam slope and prediction of damage progression for operational safety and more reliable risk assessments.

The  InMoDam project is managed by Statkraft, a leading company in hydropower internationally and Europe’s largest generator of renewable energy.  NTNU is one of the main research partners working in the project together with Multiconsult, Norconsult, Renewables Norway (Fornybar Norge) and more. Hydropower companies involved in the project include: Statkraft, Sira-Kvina, Hydro, Trønder Energi, BKK, Hafslund ECO, Eviny, Sunnhordland KS and Agder Energi.

The postdoctoral candidate will analyze field data collected in the InMoDam project and develop models for the prediction of wind generated waves on reservoirs and/or methodology for modelling damage progression within the upstream riprap slope protection on embankment dams.  Furthermore, the candidate will contribute to developing a monitoring management system, consisting of monitoring methods, data management, processing and analysis of the data, condition assessment through damage identification and prediction of the progress of damage with time, as well as associated risk-based methodology for decision making.

Your immediate leader is a professor

Duties of the position
  • Analysis of new and existing data collected in the InMoDam project, relating to the tasks described above
  • Writing reports and scientific publications from the InMoDam project
  • Supervision of Master’s students contributing to the InMoDam project
  • Contributing and participating in meetings with research partners in InMoDam
  • Participating in field work

Required selection criteria
  • You must have completed a Norwegian doctoral degree or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian PhD in Hydraulic/Dam Engineering (Structural/Geotechnical Engineering of Dams) or Coastal Structure/Marine Civil Engineering

If you can document that the PhD thesis has been submitted, your application can be assessed even if you have not yet defended your dissertation. Documentation of the obtained doctoral degree must be presented before you can take up the position

  • Knowledge relating to structural/hydraulic aspects of dams, embankments, revetments, breakwaters, or erosion protection, and loads on these structures

  • Documented experience in working with and analyzing monitoring data from dams or other structures
  • Documented experience in Structural Health Monitoring, particularly involving riprap erosion protection on dams or coastal structures
  • Documented experience in risk analysis and assessment related to dam safety or similar
  • Documented experience in numerical modelling of wind generated waves on restricted fetches and calibration of numerical models to monitoring data
