Job description

Applicants are invited for a 3 - 4 year position as Postdoctoral Fellow in the area of digitalization of work and professional knowledge development, based at the Department of Education , University of Oslo.

Digital technologies are currently reconfiguring the ways that work is organised, performed and imagined, in ways that challenge established forms of expertise and learning arrangements. The current transformation of work in the public sector is also changing our relations to governing institutions, through changes of the work performed and the expectations of engagement on behalf of citizens. The Department of Education is now seeking to strengthen its competence in research and education on the implications of emerging technologies and digital transformation for work and professional knowledge development. In addition to the research work, the position includes teaching in the Departments’ master program Knowledge development and learning in working life and in relevant courses in the bachelor programme.

The applicant is expected to write a project description as part of the application. The project description should be focused on investigating the relationship of increasingly sophisticated digital technologies at work and the development of professional knowledge (in various knowledge domains). It could for instance focus on: a) how digital information systems are transforming in the public sector with a particular focus on professional knowledge and learning, b) how shifts in technologies challenge the nature of established professional expertise and practice in different knowledge domains, or c) the ways in which technological innovations change the relationship between professionals and laymen and its implications for knowledge and learning.

The successful candidate will be part of the HEDWORK research group. Since there is already expertise in research on higher education in the group, this position will target other domains of work – in the private or public sectors.


More about the position

The appointment is a fulltime position for a period of three years. 10 % which is devoted to required duties, usually in the form of teaching activities. If there is a good match between the candidate’s competence and the Department’s teaching needs, the position is extended to four years, 25% of which is devoted to teaching duties, usually in the form of teaching activities at the department.


Postdoctoral fellows who are appointed for a period of four years are expected to acquire basic pedagogical competency in the course of their fellowship period within the duty component of 25%.

The main purpose of the fellowship is to qualify researchers for work in higher academic positions within their disciplines.


Qualification requirements
  • Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in a relevant domain, such as education, learning sciences, organisation studies, professional studies, workplace studies, or human-computer interaction. In cases when the PhD degree is not yet obtained, the doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the closing date. Appointment is dependent on the public defense of the doctoral thesis being approved
  • Documented research interest in one or more of the following areas: technological change and/or innovation, professional knowledge transformation, and/or communication and learning at work
  • The applicant should have a strong publication record demonstrating their ability to participate in a research community
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Fluency in any of the Scandinavian languages (Norwegian, Swedish, Danish) is considered to be a merit

  • Ability to collaborate with scholars from different professional backgrounds is considered to be a merit

  • Cover letter (statement of motivation, summarizing scientific work and research interest)
  • A project description for the postdoc project, including progress plan (8 - 10 pages)
  • CV (summarizing education, positions, pedagogical experience, administrative experience and other qualifying activity)
  • Copy of PhD Diploma or documentation of thesis submission. Applicants who have not yet defended their PhD dissertation need to include an advisor’s letter confirming specific expectations about when the degree will be received
  • Copies of educational certificates (academic transcripts only)
  • A complete list of publications
  • A maximum of 10 pieces of academic work that the applicant wishes to be considere
  • List of reference persons: 2-3 references (name, relation to candidate, e-mail and phone number)

In assessing the applications, special emphasis will be placed on the documented, academic qualifications, the project description (whenever this is required in the call for applicants), and the quality of the project as well as the candidates motivation and personal suitability. Interviews with the best qualified candidates will be arranged.

It is expected that the successful candidate will be able to complete the project in the course of the period of employment.
