About the position

Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences (INN University), Faculty of Education, is announcing a temporary 100% position as a doctoral research fellow in social sciences, at the research group Global Perspectives in Education (GLOBE). The position is vacant from 1 August 2024, and the scholarship period is normally four years, including 25% teaching, supervision and other relevant tasks. The doctoral candidate will have their workplace at the Department of Social Sciences, Religion and Ethics, at Hamar campus.

Teacher education and pedagogy are central education programmes at Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences. Research that strengthens the knowledge base for these education programmes is a primary focus for the faculty's doctoral programme, PhD in Teaching and Teacher Education (PROFF ). It is a prerequisite that the candidate’s doctoral education is carried out within this program and contributes to its overall aim of strengthening the knowledge base for teacher training and for professional practice in kindergartens, schools and other learning arenas.

A doctoral degree requires active participation in a research environment, and the PhD projects must therefore be geared towards a subject area that supports the PhD program and where the Faculty of Education has an active research group and can offer supervision. The announced position will be linked to research group Global Perspectives in Education (GLOBE ). GLOBE’s members primarily work at the social sciences section, and they teach and research a wide range of topics within history, geography and social sciences/ social studies. For more information about the research group, please see the website.

A total of four doctoral research fellows will be employed in the programme. The number of positions per subject area will depend on the quality of the applications evaluated against all announced areas.

About the research project and the content of the doctoral scholarship position

The successful candidate must develop a PhD project relevant for topics covered by the research group Global Perspectives in Education (GLOBE). GLOBE aims to develop and disseminate research and knowledge about global awareness and global processes of particular relevance for the teacher education programs. Global and comparative perspectives, internationalization and intercultural competence in the teacher education programs at all levels are central common topics for the group. The group members develop and disseminate research about topics such as (education for) sustainable development, climate change and climate politics, globalization processes, global citizenship and global awareness, decolonization, inequality, poverty and development, multiculturalism, race, ethnicity and racism, historical empathy, history awareness, global history, socialization, identity and relevant topics within politics and democracy. The research group is concerned with how global economic and political decisions have an impact at national and local level. The successful candidate must write a PhD project relevant for one of the topics covered by the research group.

Qualifications

It is a requirement that the applicant must be eligible for admission to INN University’s PhD programme Teaching and Teacher Education (PROFF), and that the doctoral education is carried out within this program. Applicants who have already obtained a Ph.D. level qualification will not be given priority.

In order to be admitted to the PhD programme, an applicant must normally possess: A. Teacher education and a master's degree in one of the programme's subject areas, or B. a Master's degree or equivalent in pedagogical subjects (e.g. a master's in adapted education, pedagogy or special education) or in subject specific didactics with in-depth-studies in one of the teacher education subjects that are part of the programme. Applicants without a teacher education, or who possess the equivalent of a master’s degree other than what is normally accepted as the foundation for admission, can be assessed on a case-by-case basis. A relevant master’s degree in teacher education or in a discipline within social sciences – for example geography, history, sociology, or political science – in combination with pedagogical subjects, for example teacher education or practical-pedagogical education, is considered particularly relevant for this position.

The applicant must have a strong academic foundation. For applicants with a degree from a Norwegian institution of higher education, the grade point average should normally be B or better. In cases where the grades of passed/not passed are awarded to the whole or parts of a degree, applications will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. These applicants must provide documentation that they will plausibly be able to complete a doctoral degree study.

The position and associated tasks must be carried out in accordance with the applicable laws and regulations for government employees, including also the Act on Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology, etc. Candidates who, after assessment of the application and attachments, come into conflict with the criteria in the latter act, will not be able to take up the position at Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences.
