About the position

Inland School of Business and Social Sciences , The PhD programme Innovation in Services in the Public and Private Sectors (INSEPP) , invites candidates to apply for a 3-year PhD research fellowship to work with the broad field of innovation/regional development with particular focus on housing. Depending on the department`s needs, and the candidate`s competence and desires, the position may be transformed into a four-year position with 25% teaching duties.
The purpose of the PhD Research Fellowship for the admitted candidate is to undergo a research-training programme that leads to the successful completion of a doctoral degree. The candidate has to apply to the PhD programme INSEPP and is expected to participate actively in INSEPP’s activities.
The candidate will be part of the Department of Economics and Business Administration . In addition to INSEPP, this milieu represents a valuable resource to the PhD studies. There are also various research groups in which the candidate can participate.

About the project

The PhD candidate will be a part of an international team of innovation researchers at INN University. The
project Housing market and housing policy explores various issues and challengers to housing economics and affordable housing.
The Housing market and housing policy project will co-operate with leading milieus in the field, and abroad research stays will be facilitated. The project will seek to establish new knowledge about the challenges Norwegian municipalities’ face in the housing market, and which housing policy options and solutions that may be applied. Housing market and housing policy draw on interdisciplinary literature from social science, economics, geography, regional planning, and public policy.
The candidate must have good methodological knowledge in the method chosen in the project, as well as other relevant theoretical and empirical tools. The following description provide information about the different fields of study:
We are seeking a candidate with particular attention towards the role of housing market and housing policy in providing affordable housing. Examples of study topics can be: 1) To what extent does locality contribute to challenges on the housing market? 2) To what extent does challenges in meeting the housing need of the population vary between generations and socioeconomic groups? What characterize regions and dwellings that perform best or worse in meeting the housing need of the population? 3) Which innovative housing solutions, economically and environmentally sustainable, may be relevant in meeting the housing needs for the population (owning, renting, subletting, type of housing, and location). 4) How may stakeholders, private companies and public actors cooperate to create affordable housing solutions, adapted to local development and jobs? What instruments exist and what barriers do they face?
We are looking for candidates that are highly motivated for research on housing in the field of social science, economics, geography, or regional development.

Qualifications

• The master’s degree must be composed of 120 ECTS, including a master's thesis of at least 30 ECTS cf. the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education’s (NOKUT) requirements for admission to PhD education at Norwegian universities and INN’s PhD regulation. As a rule, the average grade must be B or better.
• Applicants with a master’s degree from universities abroad, must attach “Recognition of foreign higher education” from Directorate of Higher Education and Skills (HK-Dir). • Master Thesis on the topic of economics, regional and rural planning, geography, social science, public policy etc.
• Good quantitative methodological knowledge. Candidates with experience in spatial analysis/econometrics are welcoming candidates, but there is no requirement to have these skills.
• Expertise in the use of relevant ICT software in the PhD program and possibly in teaching.
• Research experience acquired after completion of the master’s degree is a pro, but not a requirement.
• Oral and written English is required. In addition, it is highly desirable to have command of a Scandinavian language.
• Ability to work independently and purposefully but also have a command of co-operation on research tasks and publishing.

Evaluation of candidates for the position will be based on a total assessment of educational background, experience and personal suitability, as well as motivation and other eligibility requirements, as defined in the advertisement. In addition, the following will be emphasized: quality of the project description, documented independent research and development work or experience relevant to the project.

The position and associated tasks must be carried out in accordance with the applicable laws and regulations for government employees, including also the Act on Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology, etc. Candidates who, after assessment of the application and attachments, come into conflict with the criteria in the latter act, will not be able to take up the position at Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences. Necessary approvals must be maintained throughout the employment relationship.

How to apply

Relevant applications will be considered by an expert committee. The application and all attachments are to be submitted electronically and should include the following:

• The applicant must submit a project proposal with a progress plan in Norwegian or English, 5-7 pages, that explains how the research work will be carried out and addresses academic relevance, challenges and possibilities within the project. The PhD research fellow hired will prepare a complete project proposal creating the basis for admission to the PhD program in collaboration with a supervisor. The project proposal plays an important part in evaluating applicants and must show how the project will lead to a successful completion of a doctoral degree within four years.
• Application letter
• CV (summarizing education, job positions, and academic work)
• Other work that is relevant for the application
• Certified copies of transcripts and diplomas for the whole bachelor and master’s degree. An English translation of all education documents is required unless the documents are in Norwegian.
• Names and contact information of at least 2 reference persons.
• A copy of the master thesis (in PDF)
