PhD position

The Department of Mathematics  at the University of Bergen has a vacancy for a PhD fellowship in mathematics education. The position is for a fixed-term period of three years, with the possibility of a fourth year of compulsory work (e.g. teaching).


About the project/work tasks:

The PhD fellow will be included in the department's research group in mathematics education. The topic of the PhD project must be within the framework of the mathematics education research area. The department has a particular desire to develop the area of educational research and research on teaching and learning at the intersection between secondary school and undergraduate education in mathematics at the department. Other topics within mathematics education are also relevant, such as technology, programming, and algorithmic thinking in mathematics.

Skills/Qualifications
  • Applicants must have obtained a master's degree in mathematics education, or have written a master's thesis in mathematics education, e.g. applicants who have integrated lecturer education with a mathematics education master's thesis. Master's students who have not obtained the degree may apply if they complete the final master's exam before 15.07.2024. It is a condition of employment that the master's degree has been awarded
  • Applicants must document good competence in mathematics at a high level (university level)
  • Teaching competence in mathematics or mathematics education is an advantage
  • Applicants must be able to use written and spoken English at a good level
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and demonstrate good collaborative skills
  • Applicants must be fluent in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language

Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized.


Specific Requirements

The University of Bergen is subjected to the regulation for export control system. The regulation will be applied in the processing of the applications.

Eligibility criteria

  • a project description (up to six pages) with research question, rationale, theory, methodology and a preliminary bibliography for the project the candidate wants to do research on
  • the names and contact information for two referees. One of these should be the main advisor for the master's thesis

  • transcripts and diplomas showing completion of the bachelor's and master's degrees. If you have not yet completed your master's degree, please submit a statement from your institution confirming the expected date of award of your master's degree. Your master's degree must be documented with transcripts and/or diploma, alternatively a confirmation from your institution on completed degree and your grade by 15.07.2024
  • relevant certificates, e.g. documentation of teaching
  • approved documentation of proficiency in English (if required, cf. English language requirements for PhD admission )
  • a list of scientific work (if any)
  • your publications (if any)

Selection process
About the PhD Research Fellow position:

The fellowship will be for a period of 3 years, with the possibility for a 4th year, consisting of 25 % compulsory work (e.g. teaching responsibilities at the department) distributed over the employment period. The 4th year is contingent on the qualifications of the candidate and the teaching needs of the department and will be decided by the head of department upon appointment.

The employment period may be reduced if you have previously been employed in a qualifying post (e.g. research fellow, research assistant).

About the research training
As a PhD fellow, you must participate in an approved educational program (the MaScE research school) for the PhD degree within a time frame of 3 years. The deadline for applying for admission to the PhD program at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences is two months after taking up the position or after the start of the research project that will lead to the PhD degree. It is a prerequisite that you meet the requirements for admission to the PhD program at the University of Bergen.
