About the position

Position as PhD Research Fellow in Experimental Nuclear Physics is available at the Department of Physics.

No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo.

Starting date no later than October 1, 2024.

The fellowship period is 3 years. A fourth year may be considered with a workload of 25 % that may consist of teaching, supervision duties, and/or research assistance. This is dependent upon the qualification of the applicant and the current needs of the department.

Job description

The research of the Nuclear Physics group is focused on the study of atomic nuclei under extreme conditions, e.g. nuclei at high excitation energy at the transition from quantum order to chaos, exotic nuclei with an unusual ratio of protons and neutrons, and nuclear reactions in astrophysical environments. To obtain experimental information under such conditions is crucial in order to constrain and improve theoretical nuclear structure models, and to understand how elements heavier than iron are formed in explosive stellar environments. The PhD project is closely related to the research activity “Nuclear Properties” of the Norwegian Nuclear Research Center, in which the successful candidate will participate.The present PhD project aims at studying collective and single-particle properties of neutron-rich nuclei in the region around 78Ni by measuring electromagnetic transition probabilities. The experimental determination of transition probabilities is crucial for understanding the onset of deformation and shape coexistence near doubly magic 78Ni and provides important benchmarks for theoretical calculations.

The focus of the project is to perform lifetimes measurements of excited states ranging from few picoseconds to several microseconds via recoil distance Doppler shift (RDDS) and fast timing methods, respectively. Planned experiments include RDDS lifetime measurements following multinucleon transfer reactions with the AGATA detector coupled to the PRISMA spectrometer at Legnaro National Laboratories (Italy) and fast-timing measurements following beta decay with the IDATEN LaBr3(Ce) detector array at the BigRIPS fragment separator at RIKEN Nishina Center (Japan).

The candidate is expected to contribute to the experimental effort and take responsibility for data analysis, including the development of relevant data analysis techniques and software and Monte Carlo simulations of the detector responses within the GEANT4 framework. The experimental results will be compared to theoretical calculations, which will be partly performed by the candidate and partly in collaboration with international partners.

Qualification requirements

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition to be among Europe’s leading communities for research, education and innovation. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

Required:

• Master’s degree or equivalent in physics, with specialization in experimental nuclear physics
• Foreign completed degree (M.Sc.-level) corresponding to a minimum of four years in the Norwegian educational system
• A scientific profile relevant for the nuclear structure research program as outlined above
• A solid background in scientific computing, including proficiency in Python or C++ programming
• Fluent oral and written communication skills in English

Desired:

Several qualifications are considered strongly desirable and will be used in the ranking of the candidates:

• Experience with gamma-ray spectroscopy
• Experience with data analysis techniques relevant for lifetime measurements
• Experience with heavy-ion spectrometers such as BigRIPS or PRISMA
• Knowledge of nuclear structure models from Master-level courses
• Experience with Monte Carlo simulations and familiarity with the GEANT4 simulation framework
• Familiarity with data analysis tools such as ROOT

Candidates without a Master’s degree have until 30 June, 2024 to complete the final exam.

Grade requirements and language requirements:
The norm is as follows:

• The average grade point for courses included in the Bachelor’s degree must be C or better in the Norwegian educational system
• The average grade point for courses included in the Master’s degree must be B or better in the Norwegian educational system
• The Master’s thesis must have the grade B or better in the Norwegian educational system
• Fluent oral and written communication skills in English
• For candidates who would like to apply for a fourth year including teaching, good knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language is strongly preferred.

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.
