PhD position

The Department of Mathematics has a vacancy for a PhD position in mathematics for geoscience with start date as soon as possible. The position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years.

The position is part of the Norwegian Research Council funded Center for Sustainable Subsurface Resources (CSSR): https://cssr.no/ .

About the project/work tasks:

As stated on the CSSR website, the “Centre for Sustainable Subsurface Resources is a national research centre dedicated to providing new subsurface knowledge and digital solutions to drastically reduce Norway’s offshore emissions. At CSSR, we work towards understanding how operators best can implement clean energy sources based on each asset’s unique underground situation. We also explore new ways of using the subsurface to store clean energy. CSSR will help leverage the knowledge and investments connected to old hydrocarbon reservoirs to repurpose these fields for large-scale carbon storage. CSSR researchers are also doing experimental studies on the temporary storage of clean hydrogen in underground reservoirs.”

To support the ambitions of the CSSR, this project aims to develop new algorithms for integrating models of various complexity, ranging from high-performance reservoir simulation, via reduced-order models to data-driven representations of the system. In particular, we are interested in the joint applicability of such models and to what extent simpler models (possibly based on machine learning) can be integrated into full-physics simulation.

The successful candidate will contribute to research activities in the CSSR center, and in particular its work package 5. Tasks that are envisioned involve development and analysis of non-linear and linear solvers in the context of multi-model analysis of and simulation of subsurface operations.

Qualifications and personal qualities:
  • Applicants must hold a master's degree or equivalent education in applied and computational mathematics, scientific computing, computational physics or computational geoscience. Master students can apply provided they complete their final master exam before 31 July 2024. It is a condition of employment that the master's degree has been awarded
  • Strong expertise in mathematical modelling, partial differential equations, numerical analysis, and related software development is a requirement
  • Good programming skills are required
  • Experience with numerical methods for flow in porous media and/or geomechanics is an advantage, but most emphasis will be placed on background in applied and computational mathematics
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and demonstrate good collaborative skills
  • Applicants must be proficient in both written and oral English

In the assessment of relevant candidates, a holistic assessment of both quality and breadth in the candidates' background will be carried out. Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized.
