Offer Description
UiT The Arctic University of Norway has established «The Arctic MSCA-PF program» (uit.no/project/arcticmsca ) to recruit excellent young researchers planning to apply for a Marie Skƚodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship (MSCA-PF) to pursue a career in research. We invite applications from promising young researchers within the field of Theoretical Chemistry. The selected candidate will write a proposal for a 24-month MSCA-PF at UiT together with Dr. Magnus Ringholm . This is an opportunity to accelerate your research career while living in the urban research city of Tromsø, uniquely located at the top of the world surrounded by some of Europe’s last pristine wild nature.
This call is one of 70 from pre-selected supervisors at UiT The Arctic University of Norway through the “Arctic MSCA-PF program”. Successful postdoc candidates will be invited for a three-day MSCA-PF symposium June 4-6, 2024 (hybrid physical/digital event, see details at uit.no/project/arcticmsca/program-structure ). At this event, the candidates will present their past research achievements, discuss future plans with their potential supervisor and learn how to write a successful MSCA-PF application. The selected candidates will, jointly with the supervisor, write the MSCA-PF application by the deadline of September 11, 2024.
In this call we search for talented, young researchers within the field of Theoretical Chemistry as presented by Dr. Ringholm :
My research is centered around response theory and involves both quantum-chemical theory, implementation and some computational work related to the calculation and use of spectroscopically relevant molecular properties. More specifically, I have a) been a main developer of the OpenRSP program library (www.openrsp.org ) - a framework to manage the recursive and analytical calculation of non-resonant response properties - now also under development in a Python version as PyOpenRSP, b) developed theory for a second-quantization, Liouville-space formulation of response theory for approximate states, here meaning non-eigenstates of the unperturbed molecular Hamiltonian (originally funded by an RCN mobility grant, my main research topic over the last few years, and a sizable work which is now close to publication), c) sought to apply molecular properties to spectroscopically relevant phenomena, mainly involving molecular vibrations, with ambitions towards the modern technique of two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy. This latter topic (2D-IR) includes a long-standing (but as of yet not finished) development of a program for the simulation of such experiments. Out of these three general directions, I think that c) and a) are now the most suitable in which to look for projects for a postdoctoral fellow. I am looking for someone who is interested in and can carry out quantum-chemical method development and is motivated by the theory and implementation challenges this entails.
Please send your CV (max 3 pages) and describe a research project that will strengthen and complement the presented research (max 2 pages) to [email protected] by Feb 16th 2024. Mark your application "Arctic MSCA". Successful candidates will be contacted in late March 2024.

Eligibility criteria
- Supported fellows must be in possession of a doctoral degree at the time of the call deadline. Applicants who have successfully defended their doctoral thesis but who have not yet formally been awarded the doctoral degree are also eligible to apply.
- At the call deadline, supported researchers must have a maximum of 8 years full-time equivalent experience in research, measured from the date of award of the doctoral degree. Years of experience outside research and career breaks (e.g. due to parental leave), will not count towards the amount of research experience. Find Self-Assessment Tool to calculate your eligibility here .
- Recruited researchers must comply with the following mobility rule: they must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the beneficiary (for European Postdoctoral Fellowships), or the host organisation for the outgoing phase (for Global Postdoctoral Fellowships) for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before the call deadline.
