UiT The Arctic University of Norway has established «The Arctic MSCA-PF program» (uit.no/project/arcticmsca ) to recruit excellent young researchers planning to apply for a Marie Skƚodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship (MSCA-PF) to pursue a career in research. We invite applications from promising young researchers within the field of Security Studies (Societal Security). The selected candidate will write a proposal for a 24-month MSCA-PF at UiT together with Associate Professor   Monika Gabriela Bartoszewicz . This is an opportunity to accelerate your research career while living in the urban research city of Tromsø, uniquely located at the top of the world surrounded by some of Europe’s last pristine wild nature.

This call is one of 70 from pre-selected supervisors at UiT The Arctic University of Norway through the “Arctic MSCA-PF program”. Successful postdoc candidates will be invited for a three-day MSCA-PF symposium June 4-6, 2024 (hybrid physical/digital event, see details at uit.no/project/arcticmsca/program-structure ). At this event, the candidates will present their past research achievements, discuss future plans with their potential supervisor and learn how to write a successful MSCA-PF application. The selected candidates will, jointly with the supervisor, write the MSCA-PF application by the deadline of September 11, 2024.

In this call we search for talented, young researchers within the field of Security Studies (Societal Security) as presented by Associate Professor   Bartoszewicz :

With a wider background in security studies, my research interest concentrate on the non-linear and cross-sectoral threats to security. Initially, I was tracing the dynamics of radicalization of European politics and electoral tendencies. The analysis of radical politics led me to the problem of democratic insecurities in the European Union. I looked into the triggering role of societal insecurity, especially in the context of securitised migration. Exploring the contemporary European landscape through the lenses of its ‘constituent crises,’ i.e., the crisis of economy, democracy, and culture which opens up new spaces in terms of academic, political and societal responses to this phenomenon. While culture (norms, values, identities, religions) constitutes the backbone of my interests, I am applying this lens to look at how these manifest themselves in crises, violent conflicts, and various security challenges. Specifically, I look into crises in various areas such as food, resource scarcity, climate or migration and their societal fallouts. The local is inherently connected to the global aspects of these phenomena, as my current research project on North-South connections in global security explores the global connectivity that brings complex, multifaceted challenges to the Northern European region, but also provides an opportunity to building responses that address global security challenges via cooperative approaches that include the Global South.

Eligibility criteria

• Supported fellows must be in possession of a doctoral degree at the time of the call deadline. Applicants who have successfully defended their doctoral thesis but who have not yet formally been awarded the doctoral degree are also eligible to apply.
• At the call deadline, supported researchers must have a maximum of 8 years full-time equivalent experience in research, measured from the date of award of the doctoral degree. Years of experience outside research and career breaks (e.g. due to parental leave), will not count towards the amount of research experience. • Recruited researchers must comply with the following mobility rule: they must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the beneficiary (for European Postdoctoral Fellowships), or the host organisation for the outgoing phase (for Global Postdoctoral Fellowships) for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before the call deadline.
