Offer Description
UiT The Arctic University of Norway has established «The Arctic MSCA-PF program» (uit.no/project/arcticmsca ) to recruit excellent young researchers planning to apply for a Marie Skƚodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship (MSCA-PF) to pursue a career in research. We invite applications from promising young researchers within the field of Marine ecology, food webs, biodiversity, benthic processes and functions and benthic-pelagic coupling. The selected candidate will write a proposal for a 24-month MSCA-PF at UiT together with Professor Bodil Bluhm . This is an opportunity to accelerate your research career while living in the urban research city of Tromsø, uniquely located at the top of the world surrounded by some of Europe’s last pristine wild nature.
This call is one of 70 from pre-selected supervisors at UiT The Arctic University of Norway through the “Arctic MSCA-PF program”. Successful postdoc candidates will be invited for a three-day MSCA-PF symposium June 4-6, 2024 (hybrid physical/digital event, see details at uit.no/project/arcticmsca/program-structure ). At this event, the candidates will present their past research achievements, discuss future plans with their potential supervisor and learn how to write a successful MSCA-PF application. The selected candidates will, jointly with the supervisor, write the MSCA-PF application by the deadline of September 11, 2024.
In this call we search for talented, young researchers within the field of Marine ecology, food webs, biodiversity, benthic processes and functions and benthic-pelagic coupling as presented by Professor Bluhm :
My research focuses on biodiversity, structure, function and food webs of Arctic marine (mostly benthic) communities from coast to deep sea, coupling taxon identity to ecosystem function. While I focus on benthos I tend to take a system perspective by studying benthic-pelagic coupling aspects. Given the high connectivity within the Arctic Ocean and to boreal seas, I take a pan-Arctic perspective at times. Three focal areas of mine are the central Arctic Ocean, northeast Greenland (the world’s largest National Park) and the Kitikmeot Sea (in Canada’s North-West Passage) with the goal to identify status and gaps in biological knowledge, and quantify patterns, uniqueness and sensitivity. Projects on energy flow in food webs in those systems would be relevant to answer questions related to local communities, resilience, and potential fisheries in the future Arctic. I am also curious about features that make Arctic fauna unique, and perhaps sensitive or resilient. Among those, high longevity, slow growth and long larval periods are widespread, but large knowledge gaps remain in this field yet are critical to evaluating vulnerability and the capacity of Arctic biota to store or sequester carbon.
Please send your CV (max 3 pages) and describe a research project that will strengthen and complement the presented research (max 2 pages) to [email protected] by Feb 16th 2024. Mark your application "Arctic MSCA". Successful candidates will be contacted in late March 2024.

Eligibility criteria
- Supported fellows must be in possession of a doctoral degree at the time of the call deadline. Applicants who have successfully defended their doctoral thesis but who have not yet formally been awarded the doctoral degree are also eligible to apply.
- At the call deadline, supported researchers must have a maximum of 8 years full-time equivalent experience in research, measured from the date of award of the doctoral degree. Years of experience outside research and career breaks (e.g. due to parental leave), will not count towards the amount of research experience. Find Self-Assessment Tool to calculate your eligibility here .
- Recruited researchers must comply with the following mobility rule: they must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the beneficiary (for European Postdoctoral Fellowships), or the host organisation for the outgoing phase (for Global Postdoctoral Fellowships) for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before the call deadline.
