Offer Description
UiT The Arctic University of Norway has established «The Arctic MSCA-PF program» (uit.no/project/arcticmsca ) to recruit excellent young researchers planning to apply for a Marie Skƚodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship (MSCA-PF) to pursue a career in research. We invite applications from promising young researchers within the field of Earth science. The selected candidate will write a proposal for a 24-month MSCA-PF at UiT together with Professor Stefan Bünz . This is an opportunity to accelerate your research career while living in the urban research city of Tromsø, uniquely located at the top of the world surrounded by some of Europe’s last pristine wild nature.
This call is one of 70 from pre-selected supervisors at UiT The Arctic University of Norway through the “Arctic MSCA-PF program”. Successful postdoc candidates will be invited for a three-day MSCA-PF symposium June 4-6, 2024 (hybrid physical/digital event, see details at uit.no/project/arcticmsca/program-structure ). At this event, the candidates will present their past research achievements, discuss future plans with their potential supervisor and learn how to write a successful MSCA-PF application. The selected candidates will, jointly with the supervisor, write the MSCA-PF application by the deadline of September 11, 2024.
In this call we search for talented, young researchers within the field of Earth science (glaciology, geophysics, geochemistry, oceanography remote-sensing, machine-learning, robotics, sensor technology) as presented by Professor Bünz :
We are looking for highly motivated and skilled Postdoctoral candidates to join our dynamic team focused on the innovation and development of technologies for polar cryospheric research. The position is affiliated to the newly funded Norwegian Centre of Excellence, iC3: Centre for ice, Cryosphere, Carbon and Climate. iC3 aims to fill a major research gap in polar science by quantifying the future impact of ice sheet change on the Earth's carbon cycle over policy-relevant timescales. Its integrated, interdisciplinary hub of experts studying the cryosphere, oceans, atmosphere and geosphere will close order of magnitude uncertainty in polar carbon budgets, addressing the hypothesis that changing ice sheets (and aligned cryosphere) profoundly impact Earth's carbon cycle, directly affecting human societies via feedbacks to our future climate and invaluable polar ecosystems. Development and innovation across all research disciplines includes sub-ice imaging, remote data capture and aerial mapping (drones/satellite), sensor development and deployment on autonomous underwater vehicles/moorings/drones/monitoring stations, real-time data transmission, ice-adapted robotics, machine-learning and inversion techniques applied to existing data of all disciplines, GIS technologies, spatial data analysis and more. Join us in pushing the boundaries of polar technology innovation! Explore the uncharted territories of the ice sheets and contribute to groundbreaking discoveries.
Please send your CV (max 3 pages) and describe a research project that will strengthen and complement the presented research (max 2 pages) to [email protected] by Feb 16th 2024. Mark your application "Arctic MSCA". Successful candidates will be contacted in late March 2024.

- At the call deadline, supported researchers must have a maximum of 8 years full-time equivalent experience in research, measured from the date of award of the doctoral degree. Years of experience outside research and career breaks (e.g. due to parental leave), will not count towards the amount of research experience. Find Self-Assessment Tool to calculate your eligibility here .
- Recruited researchers must comply with the following mobility rule: they must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the beneficiary (for European Postdoctoral Fellowships), or the host organisation for the outgoing phase (for Global Postdoctoral Fellowships) for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before the call deadline.
