BI Norwegian Business School invites applications for the position of Associate Professor in Strategy and Innovation at the Department of Strategy and Entrepreneurship, which will also contribute to BI’s Center for the Construction Industry.
The Department of Strategy and Entrepreneurship is characterized by a dynamic and supportive research culture, with the ambition to impact research and practice both nationally and internationally. Active research areas include value creation, technology strategy, international business, entrepreneurship, innovation, networks and inter-organizational relations, organization design, strategic leadership, collaborative and knowledge-based strategy, and competitiveness. The Department of Strategy and Entrepreneurship is well connected internationally, with collaboration projects, weekly research seminars, and presence at leading conferences. The Centre for the Construction Industry conducts high-quality research that provides the construction industry and governmental bodies as well as society at-large new knowledge about the opportunities and challenges facing the industry today. Centre Faculty members are central in a growing portfolio of industry-related Executive courses.
The Department is responsible for programs and courses at all levels (Bachelor, Master of Science, MBA, PhD and Executive Programs) in the fields of Strategy, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, and offer teaching opportunities at all levels. The Department is currently home to about 40 full-time academic faculty and 15 PhD students.
Job description
Through its academic work, BI has an ambition to make its mark in the international research community while at the same time developing our students’ academic competence and skills through teaching of high educational value. Relevance and impact on practice will be ensured through extensive contact with business and industry. Teaching must be research-based, show practical relevance for working life, and contribute to students’ development of both academic competence and skills.
The Center specifically focuses on process research for understanding and realizing improvements in the industry, and how the industry is transforming in the sustainable and digital areas. 10 people are connected with the center, including a professor chair financed by the industry, PhD students, post docs and other faculty.
To the position as Associate Professor, applicants must have a PhD in strategy and/or innovation. It is a requirement that candidates can document ability to publish high-quality research in leading academic journals beyond the PhD thesis. On the teaching side, the position will be part of the team delivering tailor-made courses and programmes to the construction industry.
You will contribute to the Center for Construction Industry at BI attracting BI faculty, post docs, and PhD students interested in research topics relevant for the construction industry. The main ambition is to facilitate the development of high-quality research with impact to both theory and practice. Securing external funding of research projects and developing the center’s national and international research network are key measures to realize the above ambitions.
Expectations and obligations
Our faculty is expected to provide teaching and supervision of a high academic and pedagogical quality and is expected to continuously develop their teaching skills e.g., by making use of new technology, new ways of learning and new forms of assessment. We focus on quality and competence development, and pedagogical activities should be continuously documented, supporting the process for further academic career development to all positions.
For all research positions at BI there is a clear expectation that Faculty members regularly publishes high-quality research in acknowledged international journals, such as at level 3 or higher on the Academic Journal Guide (ABS list, UK), the Norwegian (NSD) level 2, or equivalent.
The position includes teaching and pedagogical development responsibilities. In addition to classroom teaching, this includes development of courses, learning activities, forms of evaluation, and supervision.
Qualification Requirements
Academic qualifications
- PhD degree in a relevant discipline.
- Academic production above and beyond a PhD is required.
- An established track record in publishing research in top quality outlets within the relevant discipline is required.
- Pedagogical qualifications according to the Norwegian governmental requirements (see below).
Other assessment criteria
- Language skills; English written and oral. Fluency in Norwegian or a Scandinavian language will be required for this position, given that a substantial share of courses (bachelor and executive) at BI are in Norwegian.
- Good communication skills
The following qualifications will be also considered in the assessment of the applicants:
- Documented experience with interactive and process-oriented teaching methods connected to executive education
- Knowledge of and interest in modern pedagogical approaches, as well as the development of courses and study programs
- Work experience in the field of strategy, thorough understanding of Norwegian industries and businesses, particularly of the construction industry (including building and infrastructure) and experience with applying strategy knowledge in practice will be highly valued for this position.
According to governmental provisions BI has decided on requirements concerning the educational qualifications of permanently employed academic staff. As a minimum such qualifications shall meet the learning outcome of BI‘s pedagogical basic qualification courses or equivalent. To the position of Associate Professor, if not already in place, this competence must be obtained within two years after commencing the position.
