Associate Professor in Digital Culture

The Faculty of Humanities at the University of Bergen invites applications for a permanent position as Associate Professor in Digital Culture at the Department of Linguistic, Literary and Aesthetic Studies (LLE). The starting date for the position is the 1st of October 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.


 About the Department of Linguistic, Literary and Aesthetic Studies

The department employs an academic staff of 70, 15 administrative staff, and about 40 ph.d. students and postdocs. We offer study programs in Art History, Classical philology, Comparative Literature, Digital Culture, Linguistics, Norwegian as a Secondary Language, Old Norse Philology, Scandinavian Studies, Theatre Studies and Norwegian language courses for international students and employees at the University of Bergen. LLE is also the proud host for the Norwegian Center of Research Excellence Center for Digital Narrative (CDN), and responsible for three of the most important dictionaries of the Norwegian language.

The six permanent staff members in Digital Culture offer BA, MA, and PhD degrees. Their research focuses mainly on digital literature, digital art, machine vision and artificial intelligence. Most of the activities take place under the Center for Digital Narrative (CDN), a Norwegian Center of Research Excellence for Humanities-driven research in electronic literature, games studies, digital culture, and computation to advance our understanding of digital narrative.


Work tasks:

We are seeking an Associate Professor with research expertise in digital methods and ethnographic approaches for researching contemporary digital culture. The successful applicant will have the right and the duty to conduct research within their specialty. The candidate must document research of high international standard and a good international network for their career stage. It is expected that the appointed candidate assumes an active role in research groups. It is expected that the successful candidate will assume an active role in project development, attraction of external funding and dissemination.

The successful candidate will also teach, supervise and assess students at all levels and in all programs relating to Digital Culture, and take part in the development of curricula in this field. There is also administrative work assigned to the position.

 The successful candidate will be expected to relocate to Bergen, to work and participate in the day-to-day operations of the department and to conform to the regulations that apply to the position.


Qualification requirements and personal qualities:
  • The successful candidate must have relevant research competence, corresponding to the level of a Norwegian PhD in Digital Culture or in another related research field.
  • In the evaluation, publications from the last five years will be emphasized.
  • Expertise and experience in research on contemporary digital culture using digital and ethnographic methods is required.
  • Applicants must document scholarly research within digital culture of high international standard and a strong international network.
  • Applicants must demonstrate progress in research and publication beyond their PhD dissertation and include plans for future research.
  • Documented experience with teaching in cooperation with workplaces is an advantage.
  • Experience with initiating research projects and securing external research funding is a plus. Documented competency in project leadership, coordination of research activities and strategic research planning will also be given weight.
  • Basic training and experience in teaching and supervising students at university level is a requirement for the position as associate professor. This implies completed formal pedagogical training, as well as basic skills in planning, implementation, evaluation and development of teaching and supervision. Relevant courses in combination with actual teaching experience could replace a university pedagogy program. Should the successful applicant not have such competence at the time of appointment, they will be required to document such training within two years of the date of appointment.
  • Pedagogical training must be documented in a teaching portfolio which should include a documented overview of practical experience and competence, as well as a brief reflection statement. The statement should primarily describe the applicant’s teaching philosophy and an evaluation of their own teaching in relation to their knowledge of students’ learning at a higher education level.   • Fluency in English is required.
  • The successful candidate will be required to teach in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language within three years of being appointed. The university provides suitable courses for learning Norwegian.
