Associate Professor in Cybersecurity

There is a vacancy for an associate professor at the Selmer Center in Secure Communication of the Department of Informatics within Cybersecurity.

About the Department

Digitization of businesses, industry, public administration, and education makes informatics play an increasingly important role in the development of society. Research and education in informatics are crucial for the digital transformation of our society to succeed. The Department of Informatics contributes to this through eight research groups that deliver research and education at a high international level in algorithms, bioinformatics, information security, machine learning, optimization, programming theory, visualization and didactics.

The department offers education for the future at Bachelor, Master and PhD levels. The department is in rapid growth regarding its number of students, research directions, and employees. We have today about 1000 students, and 150 employees from over 35 countries, among which 37 are faculty and 50 PhD candidates.

Work tasks/research field

The Selmer Center is one of the top ICT groups in Norway with its main research in the areas of cryptography, Boolean functions, sequence design and coding theory. The group consists of 20-25 people, including faculty, adjuncts, postdocs and PhD students.

This position is a combined research and teaching position with emphasis on applied aspects of cybersecurity. It will be an advantage if the candidate can complement the existing competences of the Selmer Center in the mathematical aspects of information security. The successful candidate must be an expert in Information Security and/or Applied Cryptography, with good experience in teaching of advanced cybersecurity courses.

Qualifications and personal qualities:
  • Applicants must have a doctoral degree or equivalent qualifications within the field of Information Security or related areas.
  • Experience in research in cybersecurity and/or applied cryptography is a requirement.
  • Experience in teaching advanced cybersecurity courses is a requirement.
  • Experience in research of AI related security aspects is an advantage. In particular, topics related to interactions between cryptography and AI: both analysing cryptosystems using AI techniques and applying cryptographic tools for evaluating security of AI systems.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and have strong collaborative skills.
  • Applicants must be able to contribute in research teams both as leader and as participant.
  • The successful candidate is expected to contribute to externally financed research activities and should document the ability to acquire external research funding.
  • Applicants must have excellent skills in oral and written English.

Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.

Educational competence requirements

Basic teaching training and experience with the supervision of students at university level is a requirement for the position as associate professor. This implies the ability to document

  • completed formal pedagogical training (relevant courses in combination with actual teaching experience can in some cases compensate for a completed course in teaching and learning in higher education).
  • basic skills in planning, implementation, evaluation and development of teaching and supervision.

Educational competence must be documented in an educational portfolio which should include a documented overview of practical experience and competence as well as a brief reflection statement. The statement should primarily describe the applicant’s own teaching philosophy and an evaluation of own teaching in relation to his/her knowledge of students’ learning at a higher education level. You will find more detailed information about criteria and documentation requirements for assessing educational competence here.

Applicants who are unable to document adequate pedagogical competence upon appointment, must meet the requirements within two years of assuming office.

The teaching language will normally be Norwegian. The successful applicant will be given the opportunity to attend courses in order to learn Norwegian and must be able to teach in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language within three years of assuming office.

The University of Bergen emphasizes the importance of educational competence in scientific positions.
