Information about the Department

The Department is organized into six sections:

  • Managerial Economics, Finance and Operations Research
  • Health, Safety and Environment Management
  • Strategy and Business Development
  • Operations Management
  • Experts in Teamwork
  • Section of Economics and management (NTNU Gjøvik)

The position is part of the Managerial Economics, Finance and Operations Research section. This is a cooperation-oriented research group with several internationally recognized researchers who are active in many national and international research projects and programmes (financed by for example EC H2020, the Research Council of Norway). The section cooperates closely with both industry and governmental bodies. The section’s teaching duties are closely connected to the department’s 5-year Master of Technology program in Industrial Economics and Technology Management, which is one of the most prestigious master programs in Norway. 

In addition, the section has a considerable responsibility for teaching finance, business economics, managerial economics, and optimization, both in common and elective courses for all engineering students at both bachelor and master level.

The department (IØT) has as its mission to carry out education and research activities at a high international level. IØT’s core activity lies in the intersection between technology/natural sciences, business economics, management, and HSE, aiming to promote sustainable value creation in technology-based areas in industry, business and the public sector in Norway.

We are looking for employees who have experience with and potential for continuous innovation within this interface.

The position as Associate Professor reports to the Head of Department of IØT.


Main tasks and responsibilities
  • Research and dissemination of international publication quality within the field of Business Economics with a focus on Finance
  • Teaching in the scientific area of business economics, emphasizing investment evaluation, finance, and financial management both at introductory and advanced levels
  • Teaching according to the existing study plan
  • Exam preparation and evaluation without additional pay
  • Development of the scientific area and study programs
  • Supervision of master and doctoral candidates
  • Scientific area responsibility together with the other scientific staff
  • Initiating and coordinating work with developing research proposals
  • Participating, leading, and managing externally funded research projects
  • Relevant administrative and/or managerial tasks

Required qualifications 

To qualify for this position we require: 

1)       A Norwegian PhD or equivalent foreign PhD in one of the following four research areas:

          a)   Empirical industrial organization

          b)   Empirical finance

          c)   Quantitative methods applied to business economics

          d)    Financial mathematics or financial engineering

2)      Documented scientific qualifications in at least two of the four mentioned areas 1 a)-d).

3)      Published research in recognized and relevant international scientific journals. Scientific articles published in the last five years with relevance for the research areas indicated above will weigh strongest in the evaluation and ranking (The five-year period is to be extended by the duration of statutory leaves.). We desire an active researcher to fill this position, and consider the scientific publication record in light of how long ago the candidate received their PhD, and the duration of the PhD studies.

4)      Documented experience in teaching quantitatively-oriented business economics. The candidate must be able to teach investment evaluation, finance, and financial management.

The following qualifications will count positively in the evaluation and ranking of the candidates:

I.            Scientific competence relevant for the technology specializations of the students in the department’s master program in Industrial Economics and Technology Management, (https://www.ntnu.no/studier/mtiot/oppbygning )

II.            Experience with supervision at master and/or PhD level

III.           Experience with initiating and/or managing research projects

IV.           Collaboration experience with industry and/or the public sector

V.            International collaboration experience

VI.           Ability to collaborate with engineering disciplines

VII.         Fluency in a Scandinavian language

Candidates who have recently defended their dissertation, along with candidates who have submitted their dissertation for the evaluation committee at the time of application, but not yet defended, are encouraged to apply.

Other requirements

Basic qualifications in the discipline of education are required. Anyone who is appointed without having formal, basic qualifications in the discipline of education (formerly referred to as practical qualifications in teaching at university level) and who is unable to document equivalent qualifications is required to complete an approved course within two years of appointment. Pedagogical qualifications will be evaluated. The evaluation will be based on documented pedagogical material, pedagogical education, skills from presentations of scientific work, experience from PhD or master level supervision, and other kinds of teaching and pedagogical experience. The overall level of the qualifications will be evaluated.

It is a formal prerequisite that, within three years of appointment, new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language can demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three in the course in Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU. The University provides such courses. After three years, the candidate should be able and willing to teach and do research in Norwegian.

Salary and conditions

The gross salary for the position of Associate Professor (code 1011) is normally from NOK 600 000,- to NOK 731 400,- per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.

After the appointment, you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The total work obligation is divided into research, teaching and administration. The division between these fields of work obligation will vary, but approximately equal time should be devoted to research and teaching.

The person appointed must comply with decisions on changes due to developments in the subject area or due to organizational changes that may result from decisions regarding the university's activities.

Primary residency in Trondheim is a prerequisite. The person appointed must live in a location enabling him/her to be present at and available to the department.
