The postdoctoral fellowship position is a temporary position where the main goal is to qualify for work in senior academic positions.

We have vacancies for two Postdoctoral Fellow positions in Underwater Noise at the Marine Section of the Department of Biology in the Marine Bioacoustics and Ecology Lab under the supervision of Prof. Ana Širović, jointly with other section professors. One position will have focus on the impact of operational wind farm noise on zooplankton („Zooplankton position“) and the other's focus will be on impact of noise on Atlantic salmon („Salmon position“).

The research in the Marine Bioacoustics and Ecology Lab is focused on the development and use of acoustic methods to study marine animals, including studies of ocean ambient sound and noise impacts. The two positions are funded by JPI Oceans Underwater Noise call under PURE WIND and DIAPHONIA consortia. Field and lab work will be expected as part of both projects. In addition, the postdoctoral fellows will be expected to participate in the work of their respective consortia, including interactions with multiple European partners. Expected start date for both positions is on or around 1 April 2023.

The postdoctoral fellow hired for the “Zooplankton position” will be responsible for contributing to the study of impact of operational offshore wind farm noise on zooplankton abundance, behavior, distribution, and migration patterns by conducting exposure experiments using small-scale laboratory and in-situ mesocosm approaches. The plan is to use the copepod Calanus finmarchicus, a key mesozooplankton species in the Norwegian Sea and a major prey for higher trophic levels across the North Atlantic Ocean, as a model organism using cultured and wild populations. While zooplankton experimental experience is considered essential for this position, any marine acoustics experience will be considered a plus. This position reports to Profs. Širović and Aberle-Malzahn.

The postdoctoral fellow hired for the “Salmon position” will participate in the study of the behavioral response of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar, to noise exposure within a dose-response framework to biomarker measures. The purpose of the research is to combine behavioral observations with measurements of physiological metrics of response, in the framework of a short (hours) and long-term (month) controlled exposure experiments. The focus will be on the effects of exposure on fish stress, reproduction, growth and health. Previous experience conducting fish exposure and fish physiology experiments will be considered beneficial for the position. This position reports to Profs. Širović and Finstad.

Specific duties of the “Zooplankton position”:

• Conduct experiments on the effects of operational wind farm noise on zooplankton

Specific duties of the “Salmon position”:

• Conduct experiments on the effects of anthropogenic noise on the behavior and physiology of Atlantic salmon

Additional expected duties for both positions:

• Participate in lab and field work as required by the project
• Submit publications to peer-reviewed journals
• Present research at national and international meetings
• Participate in consortium meetings and activities
• Advise Master’s students
• Participate in regular lab activities: lab meetings, field logistic operations, collaboration with colleagues, etc.

• You must have completed a Norwegian doctoral degree or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian PhD
• You must have a professionally relevant background in marine biology/ecology/physiology/oceanography or bioacoustics
• Solid statistical analysis experience and knowledge
• Good track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals
• Very good written and oral English language skills

Additional required selection criteria for “Zooplankton position”:

• Experience using experimental approaches to study zooplankton in the lab and in-situ
• Cultivation experience of plankton organisms
• Demonstrated skills in experimental design and analyses in marine ecology

Additional required selection criteria for “Salmon position”:

• Experience in conducting behavioral studies on fish in captive conditions
• Experience in conducting fish exposure and fish physiology experiments
• Having a certified course in laboratory animal science
• Skilled in performing laboratory analyses

The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Ph.D Candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate.

Preferred selection criteria for “Zooplankton position”:

• Knowledge of mesocosm experimental protocols and setups
• Experience in marine acoustics or fisheries acoustics
• Experience in project management
• Involvement in academic outreach activities

Preferred selection criteria for “Salmon position”:

• Knowledge of dose-response framework
• Experience with underwater noise measurements
• Knowledge of Atlantic salmon farming
• Involvement in academic outreach activities

As a Postdoctoral Fellow (code 1352) you are normally paid from gross NOK 563 500 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 2 years. 

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants , and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.  

After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.
