Casual / Hourly Paid Position
The School of Public Health and Interdisciplinary Studies is calling for suitable applicants to apply for a casual Teaching Assistant role in 2024.
We are looking for at least 10 dedicated Teaching Assistants to provide flexible, ongoing assistance with marking on large courses where we have up to 1500 students enrolled per semester. We will provide ongoing training and support throughout the semester.
Ideal candidates
Ideal candidates will have had some tertiary teaching or marking experience, and be enrolled in, or have completed a relevant post-graduate qualification. A high level of academic literacy is required, including familiarity with formal academic writing, and referencing. The role tends to suit students doing postgraduate studies and people wanting part-time or flexible work hours.
Online work
All marking and training is carried out fully online. This is not a teaching position - there is no classroom contact with students. You need to be computer literate and have reliable computer and internet access.
Hours
Work is available during semester time only and fluctuates according to course requirements.
In Semester 1 most marking taking place between March - June, and in Semester 2 between August - November.
Depending on your workload you could expect an average 20-25hrs per week during marking periods, with some weeks being busier than others. If you are on scholarships or have restricted hours available, that is your responsibility to manage. In addition to paid training meetings, markers are paid a set rate per completed script.
Payment starts from approximately $28 p/hour.
Successful candidates will attend an interview online on Tuesday 20 February, 2024
This will be a small group session which will include general information about the various course options and time with the recruitment team to discuss your specific skill sets and any questions you may have.
All successful candidates will attend a one-day training workshop online, either on 20 or 21 March, 2024
Further paid training, specific to each course occurs ahead of each marking round.
All training sessions are compulsory and take place online.
Course name and Marker requirements
HEAL504 Lifespan Development & Communication
A background in developmental psychology to at least graduate level.
HEAL506 Knowledge, Enquiry & Communication
High level of written English; spelling, grammar and academic referencing.
HEAL507 Health & Environment
A background in health, public health, social science or environmental science relevant to Aotearoa NZ.
HEAL609 Human Anatomy & Physiology II
Knowledge of clinical anatomy & physiology, including microbiology and pharmacokinetics, at least to graduate level. Preference for health professionals/ clinicians.
HEAL610 Methods of Research & Enquiry
Completed PG study to at least Master's level.
Knowledge of qualitative & quantitative research methodologies.
HEAL708 Professional practice & Ethics
A background in medical or health ethics studies to graduate level.
HLAW701 Health law & policy
A background in law, with specific knowledge of current NZ health law & policy.
Hauora Māori courses
Several courses in hauora Māori and Māori health promotion require 1-2 additional markers. Knowledge of Te Ao Māori, Hauora, relevance of Te Tiriti o Waitangi to health & health promotion in Aotearoa NZ today.
Public health courses- levels 5-8
Several public health courses require 1 or 2 additional markers. Knowledge of public health in the global and local contexts is required.
