NIWA is a dynamic research organisation whose purpose is to enhance the economic value and sustainable management of New Zealand's aquatic resources and environments, to provide an understanding of our climate and atmosphere, and to increase resilience to weather and climate hazards to improve safety and wellbeing of New Zealanders. NIWA is New Zealand's largest and pre-eminent provider of climate, freshwater and ocean science.

This graduate internship will provide recent Māori science graduates (BSc or MSc) with an opportunity to learn and engage in the realities of delivering Māori Environmental Research.

The successful applicants will have the opportunity to engage, conduct research, and operate at the interface between science and Te Ao Māori by contributing to and working across a wide range of active research projects led by Te Kūwaha, NIWAs National Centre of Māori Environmental Research.

This internship will provide the Māori graduates with practical experience, relationships/networks and a platform from which to consider a long-term science/research career. They will gain experience in freshwater, marine and estuarine science, fisheries, aquaculture, climate change and hazards, social/humanities research and mātauranga Māori, while learning how to communicate effectively with Māori and work collaboratively across disciplines.

The interns will be preferably based in Hamilton or Christchurch but will work on projects and tasks across all Te Kūwaha research programmes. They will assist researchers in their daily tasks and be mentored in collaborative and multidisciplinary research methods, literature reviews, developing fieldwork plans, collecting and analysing data and presenting their findings to an audience.

If you are looking for a foot in the door and are passionate about delivering environmental outcomes for Māori , please apply.
