We are looking for dynamic and passionate individuals to join our Te Ara Oranga team as an Academic Mentor. Manukau Institute of Technology has a full-time opportunity to work with the Te Ara Oranga Health Workforce Development Service project. If you are culturally compassionate and enjoy teamwork you will thrive as an Aacademic Mentor for Māori and Pasifika ākonga (students) registering with Te Ara Oranga from the Schools of Nursing, Health and Counselling and Social Work.

You will enjoy building relationships with our ākonga and bring a flexible, solution focused academic guidance and culturally appropriate pastoral support throughout their tertiary journey and into the health workforce.

Every day is different, to be successful you will need to foster a culturally safe learning environment by providing academic guidance and support to ākonga, including career advice, mentoring, resilience strategies, and developing leadership skills. You will actively engage with ākonga on an ongoing basis to ensure they are supported in achieving their health qualifications.

Key duties:

  • Support and encourage ākonga engagement, offering targeted academic assistance to ākonga when required
  • Work with a supportive team facilitating and co-ordinating relevant ākonga events cultural celebrations and academic workshops
  • Maintain ākonga documentation and records
  • Provide advice and guidance to academic staff, by assisting them with pastoral issues and advising on cultural considerations.
  • Become the key liaison for TAO ākonga with attendance issues focusing on retention and advocating on behalf of  ākonga for successful learning outcomes.
  • Assist in pathwaying ākonga into further health programs

  • You bring a passion to support Māori and Pasifika ākonga success
  • A health-related degree, relevant to this position is desired 
  • Ideally you have mentoring or teaching experience .
  • Previous experience in the health workforce industry would be great .
  • Full drivers licence
