- Co-design and undertake kaupapa Māori research to interface the needs of science, environment and community

An exciting opportunity exists at Scion for a Kaupapa Māori Senior Researcher to join our dedicated team. This is an important role which will help to support the delivery in Scion's Forests and Landscapes Impact Area. In this role, you will create pathways and identify new opportunities interfacing science and research with Māori-centred approaches that enable capacity, capability and leadership in ngahere ecosystem science. You will be given opportunities to provide innovation and help determine priorities and initiatives that have regard for Te Tiriti o Waitangi. You will work alongside and build enduring relationships with whānau, hapū, iwi, clients and regulatory bodies. Your knowledge and experience will be valuable in providing coaching and mentoring for our passionate early career scientists.

About you:
To be successful in this role you will have a passion for science that achieves impacts for the forestry sector and that benefits the New Zealand environment. You will have:
- A postgraduate tertiary qualification in Indigenous or Māori specific fields, science,environment, or related disciplines with more than 5 years' relative experience in kaupapa Māori and related research.
- Extensive experience as a practicing kaupapa Māori researcher with peer-reviewed publications and recognised as a leader in your field.
- Excellent communication skills in oral and written Māori and English.
- Demonstrated knowledge of tikanga Māori and kawa.
- Ability and proven leadership experience to develop and maintain effective external relationships with Māori networks and entities.
- Experience delivering research from ideation, co-design, proposal development, and dissemination utilising culturally appropriate methods.
- Proven experience to work with both iwi and mainstream stakeholders, agency leaders, end-users, and key clients.
- Ability to work within and interface mainstream and Te Ao Māori paradigms.
- Understanding of the policy and regulatory environment relating to Te Tiriti, kaupapa Māori and mātauranga Māori within Aotearoa New Zealand
