The AUT Gambling and Addictions Research Centre (GARC) is a dynamic centre conducting research that aims to improve New Zealanders' understanding of how gambling and addictions affect society and to enhance policy and professional practice. 

A vacancy exists for a Research Officer/Research Fellow to provide effective research support for three new projects, funded by the Ministry of Health, commencing in GARC. These projects aim to understand gambling relapse, online gaming and gambling, and financial harms experienced by people affected by someone else's gambling.

The position is 0.8 FTE fixed term for 12 months. However, as two of the projects continue for longer than 12 months there will be an opportunity to extend the role for a few months at a reduced FTE.  Furthermore, in the first year, there will also be substantial casual research hours available on a project investigating Esports harms and benefits among adolescents.  This role will involve:

  • Searching for relevant literature and drafting literature reviews.
  • Assisting with ethical approval applications.
  • Assisting with organisation of advisory group meetings and minuting the meetings.
  • Recruiting participants conducting online individual interviews, and ensuring interview transcripts are accurate.
  • Analysing qualitative data and writing up results.
  • Assisting with writing research reports.
  • Assisting with project management.
  • Contributing to dissemination activities, and other project activities.
  • Participating in other GARC activities (e.g., conferences), where appropriate

This position requires a candidate with a post-graduate qualification (ideally, a Ph.D. or Master's degree) in gambling, addictions, psychology, or other related health sciences. The position also requires substantial experience in qualitative research and data analysis, and the candidate must be a self-motivated, organised, meticulous, and reliable team player.

Salary Range: $65,000 - $77,719 Pro-rata (appointment level and salary commensurate with skills and experience)
