Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a Research Fellow in Glaciology to join Te Puna Pātiotio | Antarctic Research Centre (TPP-ARC). The role will be responsible for developing and maintaining excellent work relationships with staff in TPP-ARC and in the wider Antarctic, glaciology and climate research communities, spanning New Zealand CRIs, universities, government agencies, as well as international groups and consortia as required to perform effectively in the position.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and implement glaciological research in New Zealand (and internationally where relevant), combining field observations, existing glaciological and climate data repositories, and process-based modelling.
  • Engage in original research on glaciology.
  • Support existing projects on snow hydrology modelling, glacier monitoring, and glacier modelling.
  • Seek external funding for undertaking glaciological research, and to continue existing externally funded programmes.
  • Coordination and contribution to general undergraduate climate change courses (e.g. ESCI201 (Climate change and New Zealand’s Future).

Key Requirements:

  • PhD in the physical sciences, with an emphasis on glaciology.
  • Demonstrated ability to safely and effectively undertake fieldwork in NZ Alpine settings.
  • Demonstrated practical experience in analysing climate model data and using this to drive snow and glacier simulation.
  • Proven skills in modelling of snow and glacier processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to attract external research funding.
