The Role
A new role is available to support our Microbial Ecology • Soil Systems Team where you will have the opportunity to conduct scientific research on molecular microbiology of forest soils and plants, contributing to our broader research group Ecology and Environment. You will assist in the understanding of the interactions between trees, soils, microbial communities, and the environment. Your primary responsibilities in this role include conducting fundamental and applied research into the microbiology of forest ecosystems and contributing towards reports and scientific papers, whilst participating in workshops, seminars and conferences.
Additionally, you will work with the team to integrate molecular microbiology into systems-level biology, spanning ecosystem productivity, biodiversity, through to plant growth and health. With your demonstrated practical experience working in a laboratory and field environment you will have the capability to maintain standards, equipment, and supplies, with a strong focus on (DNA, RNA & PCR) microbiology methods. If you have a proven capability to follow scientific methods, manage experiments, and follow detailed work plans then we want to hear from you!
Requirements
- Relevant tertiary qualification (BSc or MSc in relevant areas of microbiology or plant science)
- Current full NZ driver's license
- Proven expertise in nucleic acid extraction, PCR (including assay development), real-time PCR and variants
- Experience in plant-based experiments and /or soil analysis
- Proven ability to use sterile technique to isolate and maintain micro-organisms
- Knowledge and ability to undertake molecular microbial ecology analysis of samples is preferred
- Capability to sample, process, handle and store soil, plant and other materials is advantageous
- Exceptional organizational skills and strong attention to detail
