Āu Mahi | What You Will Do
Our staff of Te Kura Whakangungu Kaiako | School of Teacher Education are looking for a new colleague to join a vibrant and well-established Māori Education whānau. This position is a full-time and continuing (i.e., permanent) position. The position will be appointed at the level of Lecturer (Teaching and Administration) only. The role will contribute to teaching in the school with a focus on initial teacher education programmes including the new Mātauranga Māori programme set to begin in 2023.
Mōu | Who You Are
Applicants should have a focus on areas that align with the needs of Te Kura Whakangungu Kaiako | School of Teacher Education such as culturally responsive and sustainable teaching and learning, akoranga Māori, Māori Education, mātauranga Māori, acquisition of te reo Māori, or teacher learning and development.
The person appointed to this position must meet the following:
- Confidence in working with local iwi and rūnanga together with an active commitment to upholding values, tikanga, kawa and traditions as guided by Ngāi Tūāhuriri, the mana whenua.
- A high level of proficiency in te reo Māori.
- A minimum of 5 years' experience teaching in Māori medium settings such as kōhanga reo, kura kaupapa, wharekura and/or bilingual school environment is essential.
- An understanding of effective teaching methods within the NZ context.
- Experience in teaching at a tertiary level or experience in teacher education, mentoring teachers, and/or leading professional learning for teachers or other adults.
- Ability to integrate digital technologies into course design and teaching.
- Ability to gain or hold registration as a New Zealand Registered Teacher.
The following are preferred qualities of prospective applicants:
- Hold a master's degree.
- Knowledge of how to embed mātauranga Māori across curriculum areas.
Please note that as the role is based in Christchurch; applicants would need to demonstrate their interest in relocating if not already based here.

Te Kura Whakangungu Kaiako | The School of Teacher Education has a staff who share a common commitment to culturally responsive and sustaining pedagogy in initial teacher education. This role will have working colleagues across the College, as well as the University, and within our communities.
