Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a Pūkenga | Lecturer in Māori Literature and Creative Communication. The role is situated in the English Literatures and Creative Communication Programme of the Te Kura Tānga Kōrero Ingarihi, Kiriata, Whakaari, Pāpāho, Tāhuhu Kōrero Toi | School of English, Film, Theatre, Media and Communication and Art History, and involves responsibility for teaching, researching and publishing in Māori literature in English and creative communication.

We are excited to welcome a scholar expert in Māori literary and creative communication to the English Literatures and Creative Communication Programme. The role involves teaching into two majors: the Literary and Creative Communication major in the Bachelor of Communication, and the English Literature major in the Bachelor of Arts. The Programme is committed to offering students encounters with the widest range of literatures in English and the literature and creative writing of these islands.

The successful candidate will:

• Have demonstrable expertise in Māori writing, and Māori literatures in English, and preferably a PhD, or one near completion, in English Literature, Creative Writing, Rhetoric, Māori Studies or another cognate discipline.
• Demonstrate a commitment to and track record of scholarly publication, and, ideally, public writing in, Māori literary and creative communication.
• Be able to teach effectively at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Māori literature, creative communication, and English literatures generally.
• Demonstrate the ability to work collegially, contribute effectively to the administration of the Programme, and support our Programme and University obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

The role will involve developing courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level, with support from the wider Programme, as well as supervising postgraduate students.

You will have the opportunity to develop a community of scholars, students and wider networks of readers and writers in literary studies.

An engaged scholar and educator, you will be self-motivated and self-organised, working with a high degree of autonomy, and will support the collegiality and cooperative work of the Programme.

Key Requirements:

• Demonstrated research expertise in Māori literature and creative communication.
• A record of successful teaching in a relevant field, such as Māori literature and creative communication, creative writing, or English literatures.
• An existing record of published academic research and/or public writing or creative writing.
• The ability to build positive and supportive relationships with colleagues.
• The capacity to work as part of a team as well as having individual responsibilities.

Our staff team is responsible for teaching a range of courses to undergraduate and postgraduate students in English Literatures and Creative Communication, as well as for providing careful supervision of postgraduates completing Honours, Masters, and PhD qualifications. We aim to be a Programme offering students access to a wide range of literatures, histories, approaches and methods in literary studies.

We combine this teaching and supervision with academic research and creative writing. Our team includes poets, novelists, specialists in seventeenth-century women’s poetry, literature and journalism, modernism, digital Oceania, and more. We value our methodological and subject diversity, and our place in Wellington’s wider literary community and culture.
