UNIVERSITY LIBRARY The Hocken is one of the foremost research libraries in New Zealand celebrating the histories, cultures and natural environments of Aotearoa New Zealand and the Pacific. Our collections - archives, publications, music and AV, ephemera, maps, photographs and art - contain both historical and contemporary material. Staff at the Hocken cater to the research needs of academics and students from the University of Otago, as well as researchers from other New Zealand and international universities and institutions, and independent professional and amateur researchers, all of whom value the diverse nature and depth of our collections. Global interest in our collections is ever increasing, and in response, we are working to ensure greater access, and the delivery of broad client-focussed researcher services. The Role/Te mahi Currently we have an opportunity for someone who shares our passion in digitisation, supporting research focused on Aotearoa New Zealand and the Pacific, and wish to contribute by providing technical knowledge and know how in specialised imaging services to enhance the delivery of our services and collections to all end users. The Imaging Technician will use digital imaging technologies to digitise Library collections. This will create high standard digital facsimile images, in response to individual order requests, or for planned digitisation programmes. They will maintain a digital copying programme which meets the long-term preservation and access objectives of the Library including ingesting files to the Library’s Digital Preservation System. Range of tasks include: • Digitising and copying collection items for individual orders and for planned collection digitisation projects. THE HOCKEN LIBRARY
Who we are/Ko wai mātou
• Using digital imaging technologies (digital camera and AV digitisation systems and scanners) to make accurate digital facsimile copies of collection items for reproduction, publication and long term preservation.
• Accurately maintain order tracking and project management documentation.
• Applying safe handling and care of collection items during copying process.
• Assisting the Senior Imaging Technician to meet prescribed milestones and best practices guidelines.
• Assisting the Senior Imaging Technician and Library staff in the assessment of collection items for digitisation and preparation for project selection.
• Providing excellent customer-based service to internal and external clients.
• Contributing to and support, as required, the Library’s low-resolution scanning and copying service to researchers.
• Demonstrating competency with the values of the University in the course of carrying out duties and provision of services (placeholder for EMG coverall for this particular accountability).
• Knowledge and experience of IT structures such as file management, data management and software management skills.
• Experience in conventional film and digital photography, photographic processes and studio lighting setups.
• Demonstrated working knowledge of best practices, industry standards and services for digitising various media (text, image, audio and moving image).
• Experience and proficiency using a range of imaging applications and audio-visual software.
• Working knowledge of Te Reo Māori and Tikanga Māori.
• An approachable, flexible and adaptable attitude.
• A strong customer service ethic, with excellent communication skills, and professional presentation.
• Excellent time management skills and ability to meet deadlines.
• An ability to work with accuracy at all times.
