Two Assistant Professors in Interaction Technology (0.8 - 1.0 FTE)

Functie

Are you enthusiastic about transferring your knowledge, motivating and inspiring our students, and making an impact in education? And do you want to contribute to advanced research and innovation? Then join the Department of Information and Computing Sciences of Utrecht University. We are searching for two Assistant Professors in Interaction Technology to join our Interaction division .
To strengthen our team we are looking for colleagues who have expertise in one of the following fields:

  • Cybernetics: The study of interactive communication between humans and machines, using adaptive signal processing, pattern recognition, ambient and wearable sensors, glass-box machine learning, data science, edge computing, information and communication theory, physics, physiology, and cognition.
  • Human-Centered Computing: In particular personalisation and adaptive interactive systems (e.g., for recommender systems, intelligent user interfaces, behaviour change interventions) or interaction with virtual humans/robots.
  • Visualisation and Graphics: Scientific visualisation (spatial/geographical data), medical visualisation (CT/MRI data, diffusion tensor imaging), information visualisation (high-dimensional data, multivariate data, graphs, and networks), high-performance computer graphics, shape modelling (mesh processing, shape reconstruction, geometric modelling), and visual analytics. We are interested in both technical aspects, and in applying such techniques and tools to solve problems in a wide range of industries.
  • Social and Affective Computing: In particular human behaviour understanding at a large scale, using big data sources (such as social media, satellite imaging, mobile phone data, etc.) and urban computing to address social scientific questions. As well as to develop novel theoretical tools and techniques that can be used for AI for social good applications and addressing sustainable development goals.
  • Music Information Computing: We connect computational modelling of musical structures for researching music as a fundamental human trait with developing novel ways of interacting with music. In interdisciplinary collaborations, we apply computational models of music in areas such as music analysis, retrieval, generation, gamified musical interactions, and music technology for inclusion, education, health and wellbeing.
  • Multimedia: Pattern analysis, recognition, and interaction with different types of media, such as (medical) images, video, 3D objects, and games. We research both the algorithmic and experimental design, often taking perceptual aspects into account. Of particular interest are multimodal search and interactions, including mixed reality.

To support you in your teaching and research activities, we have technical infrastructure available, including a motion capture and virtual reality lab , a human-centered computing lab , and a prototyping lab .
To develop new teaching and research collaborations and application areas, you will actively seek internal and external (interdisciplinary) collaborations and acquire funding for research. You are encouraged to publish in renowned scientific journals and newspapers, and to appear in other media (e.g., radio). You will teach courses in our BSc programmes in Computing Science (including Game Technology) and Information Science and MSc programmes in Human Computer Interaction and Game and Media Technology . You will also supervise individual BSc, MSc, and PhD candidates.
Our work is motivated by real-world applications and we have long-term research cooperations with organizations and industry (for example in our Center for Game Research and AI Labs ). Our work is published open access in outlets and led to several patents and software licenses. We aim to generate value for both science and society.
Utrecht University’s philosophy is that education and research go hand in hand. Our culture is characterised by a connected, open, and can-do spirit that stimulates personal initiative and curiosity. You will take ownership and create value while sharing your knowledge both internally and across the wider (global) community. If you are excited to participate and collaborate in shaping our division, we invite you to apply.
Please note that we are simultaneously looking for an Assistant Professor (education profile) in Interaction Technology (0.8 - 1.0 FTE). More information about this positions can be found on our website .
