Senior Teaching Assistant MSc Quantum Computer Science

Updated: 3 months ago
Deadline: ;

Are you eager to take a leap into the future of quantum education? Would you like to join a dedicated team of lecturers to prepare students for complex research challenges in quantum computing and quantum information theory?

At the Faculty of Science, a unique, interdisciplinary Master’s programme is being developed that will educate a new generation of scientific researchers and academic professionals who are excited to work at the frontier of physics, computer science and mathematics. MSc Quantum Computer Science is a two-year programme that equips students with advanced knowledge, skills, and insight in quantum information processing. Graduates will be able to actively contribute to the understanding of the position, role, and responsibility of quantum technologies in science and society. MSc QuCS is currently undergoing the procedure of getting approval from the Dutch government (NVAO accreditation).

During the early years of the Master’s programme, the Senior Teaching Assistant will assist in running the programme's courses from September 2024, under supervision of course coordinators. In the academic year of 2023-2024, we have four pilot courses on offer in which you could already become involved.

This position is a great opportunity for someone who wants a first job within academic teaching. In this role, you can gain valuable knowledge and experience for your next career step, both within and outside academia.

What are you going to do?

  • Assisting in running seminars and practical sessions focussed on theory-based assignments or programming;
  • Assisting in the instruction of Teaching Assistants (students) who are involved in the courses so they are sufficiently prepared to supervise practical sessions, e.g. through weekly meetings and additional explanation of the course materials;
  • Giving feedback on weekly assignments;
  • Maintaining the digital learning environment (Canvas);
  • Providing administrative support to course coordinators for lectures, practical sessions and projects.
  • Staying informed about quantum computing needed to fulfil your role accordingly.

You will work on different courses at the same time. The programme director will liaise with you about which courses you will be assigned to based on your interests and skills on the one hand and course requirements on the other.

What do you have to offer?

  • You have a Master’s degree that is relevant to the field of quantum computing, for instance Physics, Mathematics or Computer Science;
  • You can demonstrate academic excellence and mathematical maturity, for instance good grades for relevant courses;
  • You can demonstrate that you are interested in quantum related topics, for instance by having taken several courses related to quantum theory;
  • You have excellent English skills (verbal & written);
  • You are eager to dive into the ins & outs of quantum computing to be able to assist with several courses within our programme;
  • You work well independently and as part of a team.

Our offer

       We offer a temporary employment contract for 4 years (with a 2-month probation period) for 30 to 38 hours per week (depending on your availability), with a starting date that is as soon as possible. At your own request, fewer hours are negotiable, with a minimm of 24 hours.

Your salary, depending on your relevant experience on commencement of the employment contract, ranges between €3,226 to €5,090 gross per month for a full working week of 38 hours. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8.3% year-end allowance. The Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU) is applicable. A favorable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants.

Please note! It is not possible to offer this contract to candidates who currently, or in the past 6 months, have (had) employment with the University of Amsterdam, with the exception of Student Assistants and PhD students. Your possible application will not be eligible for consideration for this reason.

The Faculty of Science offers you a four-year contract, which includes 0.1 FTE dedicated to training and development. This combination of working as a senior teaching assistant while following training is called the Lecturer Development Programme (Docent Ontwikkel Programma, DOP). The purpose of the DOP is to optimise your position on the job market (employability and career opportunities) once your temporary employment comes to an end. During your four-year contract, you will follow training modules together with other senior teaching assistants; this will include the opportunity to obtain the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ/BKO). Together with your supervisor, you will draw up a Personal Development Plan (Persoonlijk Ontwikkelplan, POP) detailing the specifics of your customised programme.

Besides salary, training and the inspiring professional environment at Science Park, we offer a varied package of fringe benefits:
