Maastricht University is looking for 2 Teachers in psychology

Updated: over 1 year ago
Job Type: Temporary
Deadline: 01 Dec 2022

For this challenge, the faculty is looking for recently graduated psychologists interested in teaching at a university and who have strong affinity to the academic world. Your activities will include individual supervision of students, running tutorial meetings and practicals. The topics you teach will partly be determined by your experience, knowledge and interests.

Teachers who supervise tutorial meetings are called a tutor. As such, you will supervise groups of 10-12 students. You will mainly participate in our bachelor programme, but depending on your expertise, you can also run tutorial meetings in the masters. The tutorial meetings are organized according to the principle of problem based learning (PBL) in our faculty. In these meetings, you do not behave as traditional lecturer, but as a supervisor. On the background, you observe and analyse the group process and, if necessary, you correct it by asking questions, providing examples or advice, and usually not by directly providing the information. You challenge the students to gain a deeper understanding of the material and to stimulate their academic thinking. Additionally, you will be asked to mentor students and/or participate in skills training. Finally, you supervise students in writing bachelor theses.

You can partly determine your teaching duties over the academic year; part will be fixed (e.g., bachelor thesis supervision). The tutorial groups are held at regular times throughout the year. In the bachelor, they take place once every week on Monday and Friday and the other week on Wednesday. Tutorial meetings in the master programs take place on Tuesday and Thursday. Mentorships can be organised by you.

In preparation of your teaching activities, if needed you participate in the tutor training. If you have experience with PBL, we explicitly ask you to mention this in your application letter. During your appointment, you will have the opportunity to acquire the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ, in Dutch BKO), the didactic proficiency certificate for teaching staff in academia.
