ICT Developer Bioimage Analysis

We are looking for a highly collaborative and motivated bioimage analysis developer who is excited about microscopy data and generating computational tools to process, quantify and visualize biological imaging data. 

This position is connected to the van Leeuwenhoek Centre for Advanced Microscopy (LCAM), which houses state-of-the-art fluorescence imaging systems, generating rich datasets that require processing, quantitative analysis, and visualization. In addition, LCAM is part of the NL- and EU-Bioimaging large scale research infrastructure initiatives. LCAM supports research at the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences (SILS) and external users, by providing training, access to equipment, and expertise. We aim to extend support also towards processing and analysis of bio-image data in collaborative projects. In addition, we want to expand our activities and expertise in automated image acquisition, processing and analysis.

What are you going to do? 


You are expected to:
•    design, test and implement computational pipelines for the acquisition, processing, quantification and visualization

     of biological data from fluorescence imaging experiments;
•    test and implement new image analysis algorithms, and protocols for automated or ‘smart’ microscopy;
•    maintain and document existing and new image analysis pipelines;
•    participate actively in NL- and EU-Bioimaging networks representing LCAM-FNWI related to image data handling

     and processing;
•    teach image analysis in undergraduate and graduate courses, and courses organized by LCAM;
•    collaborate with other research groups and external collaborators by contributing bioimage analysis expertise;
•    participate in group meetings and scientific discussions.

What do we require?

 
You have/are:
•    a MSc degree in Computer Science, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Biomedical engineering,

     or in a related field;
•    demonstrated experience in image processing and scientific programming in Python, MATLAB or similar;
•    the ability and willingness to collaborate with biologists and integrate user-feedback into

     the processing/analysis pipelines;
•    the ability to work both independently and as part of a dynamic research team;
•    the ability to communicate with colleagues and collaborators at different levels of technical expertise;
•    fluent in spoken and written English.

Ideally, you have experience with classical image analysis and familiarity with one or multiple tools like Fiji, ilastik, CellProfiler, napari, QPath, etc. Prior experience with deep learning methods for image analysis, FAIR data and Research Data Management and experience in teaching would be an advantage. 

Our offer 


We offer a temporary contract for 38  hours a week for the duration of 12 months, preferably starting on 1 May 2024. A permanent contract subsequently follows if we assess your performance positive. 

The salary, depending on relevant experience before the beginning of the employment contract, will be  €3.226 to €5.090 gross per month, based on a fulltime contract (38 hours a week). This is exclusive 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.

About the Faculty of Science and the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences 

The faculty of Science of the University of Amsterdam (UvA FNWI) employs 1,474 FTE scientists and currently 7,200 students are enrolled within our BSc and MSc programs. Within the faculty, research in diverse fundamental science disciplines is organized within 8 research institutes. One of these 8 institutes is the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences (SILS), which addresses (cell) biology research and currently brings together approximately 240 researchers in 18 research groups and four underpinning technologies.

Within the UvA FNWI and SILS we harbour the Van Leeuwenhoek Centre for Advanced Microscopy (LCAM FNWI), which has a long-standing connection to the National roadmap NL-BioImaging AM since its founding in 2012 and which actively participates as Flagship node for functional imaging in the Euro-BioImaging ESFRI facility. Our participation in advanced microscopy research infrastructures underlines the importance of quantitative functional imaging of live cells and tissues, which is essential for modern competitive life sciences research.
