Offer Description

You will work within the research data support department of the Utrecht University Library . Within the UU, as a department we are part of the virtual Digital Competence Centre (DCC), which means you will be in contact with all seven faculties. Partly because of this, it is a job in a dynamic and positive environment and we offer a lot of freedom to plan your working week yourself.

Your job
As research data consultant (data steward), you support researchers from all faculties with various issues concerning their data. These include storage, analysis (which tools are available), privacy and sharing data (making data findable and accessible). Your target group consists of researchers, research support staff and students across all disciplines and faculties.

You will become part of a multidisciplinary network of data experts within Utrecht University and the University Medical Centre Utrecht. Within the library, you will act as a linking pin between researchers and the broad expertise and knowledge of the network. Together with your colleagues, you will further develop the shared service infrastructure. This means that you have good teamwork skills and an open an communicative attitude.

In the coming years, we want to offer more support from the department in order to make datasets more findable, accessible and reusable. We also have more and more questions about privacy and data. You will investigate which questions arise, which tools are already available and, where possible, develop standard solutions that can be used by more researchers. You will work closely with researchers, research software engineers and other data stewards within the university. Where necessary, you will be seconded part-time to a faculty to work on a project in consultation.

In light of open science, there are constantly new dots on the horizon and we have room for this within UU, so in terms of content there is a lot to learn and develop. Because of both these larger issues and the daily tasks within the department, you have a job with a lot of variety.

Requirements
Specific Requirements

Through your experience in academia, you understand the philosophies around open science and are able to advise and support researchers so that they can make their data as interoperable and reusable (FAIR) as possible. Except for that:

  • You have a Master's degree and at least one or two years of relevant work experience. You have experience with or knowledge of managing (meta)data and/or privacy-sensitive data or are willing to develop yourself further in this area.
  • You can work well together with people who have different areas of expertise from you.
  • You have average programming skills in R or Python and some experience with Git and GitHub, or you are willing to learn this.
  • You master new material quickly and know how to implement this within your own work.
  • You have a good command of English. For international candidates, we require a command of the Dutch language (level B2) and a strong willingness to develop this further.
  • Knowledge of FAIR principles and privacy legislation is a plus.
