Do you want to help scientists improve weather and climate predictions and take up the challenge of managing large quantities of data streams from different sensors and sites across the Netherlands? Then you should apply to become our new Data Manager for the Ruisdael Observatory of atmospheric science at TU Delft!

We are looking for an experienced Data Manager/Data scientist to oversee the different data acquisition and distribution systems related to the Ruisdael observatory of atmospheric sciences (http://ruisdael-observatory.nl). Your main mission will be to ensure that information flows timely and securely from a large number of sensors in Cabauw, Delft, Rotterdam and Lutjewad to TU Delft and, from there, to individual users and larger data centers such as the KNMI data platform (https://dataplatform.knmi.nl/) and the Actris data center (https://www.actris.eu). In addition to managing the data, you will collaborate with a diverse team of researchers, teachers, technicians and students to build custom-made solutions for processing, visualizing, assimilating and analyzing the collected data for scientific purposes.

Responsibilities:

  • Devise and implement efficient solutions for data collection, storage and management in relation to the national Ruisdael observatory for atmospheric sciences.
  • Coordinate with local (TU Delft), national (Ruisdael) and European (Actris) project partners and data centers to ensure the long-term storage and dissemination of data/results.
  • Handle requests for information and data access from project partners, support staff members, researchers and students.
  • Ensure all data are protected from potential accidents, breaches or malicious attackers.
  • Monitor the data systems to evaluate their performance, detect outages and ensure the highest possible data availability and quality.
  • Write documentation and reports for all available datasets, products and protocols.
  • Design tools and services for visualizing/analyzing and disseminating the collected data.
  • Help with the installation and troubleshooting of sensors.

The candidate should be tech-savvy, creative and detail-oriented. We seek people with experience in:

  • Data management: version control (Git), containerization (Docker), REST APIs
  • Databases: storing, processing and organizing large amounts of data in different formats.
  • Programming: familiar with Python, the linux operating system and web servers.
  • Problem-solving: ability to quickly identify and troubleshoot problems.
  • Analytical thinking: ability to critically analyze data, see patterns and pay attention to details.
  • Communication: excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • A salary according to the Collective Labor Agreement of the Dutch Universities, plus 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.
