Deadline: 22 Oct 2021

Organisation

The Faculty of Arts is built on a long-standing tradition of four centuries. Our mission is to be a top-ranking faculty with both an excellent education and world-quality research, with a strong international orientation, firmly rooted in the North of the Netherlands. We build and share knowledge benefits to society. We work at a modern, broad and international institution, educating over 5000 Dutch and international students to become forward-looking, articulate and independent academics. We are a hardworking and diverse team of 700 staff members.

Job description

The Groningen Institute of Archaeology (GIA) engages in fundamental archaeological research in Northwest Europe, the Mediterranean and the Polar Regions. GIA stimulates and integrates fundamental research on past human societies and their environments, from Palaeolithic hunter-gatherers to complex urban societies. The Institute facilitates research and fieldwork through its laboratories, drawing facilities, documentation, GIS, and technical support (

). Its Mediterranean Archaeology research group consists of six academic staff and about 18 active post-doctoral researchers and PhD students. The group has an international reputation in the areas of landscape archaeology and mortuary archaeology, with a geographical focus on Italy, Greece, and the Middle East. It teaches parts of a BA program in archaeology, followed by a 1-year applied or a 2-year research MA program.

We offer you a position that combines teaching and administration (ca. 40%) with research (ca. 60%).

What will you be working on?

You will be teaching and helping to develop general courses in Mediterranean Archaeology in the Archaeology and Classical Studies BA and are willing to teach also in other related programmes. You will be working with colleagues in the Departments of Classical Studies, Ancient History, and Landscape History. You will take part in the Master and Research Master Archaeology programs including supervision of theses and tutorials, and assume some management duties.
You will help strengthen the research profile of the Groningen Institute of Archaeology by developing new research ideas, collaborations, and approaches. Your specialization is in Mediterranean archaeology, with an emphasis on the landscape archaeology of Italy in the Hellenistic-Roman period. You will be expected to acquire (independently or jointly) new funding for this, and will co-supervise PhD students when appropriate. We welcome initiatives to develop collaborations within the Faculty of Arts, such as with the Center for Digital Humanities and the Centre for Landscape Studies, with the interfaculty research institute CRASIS, and with national and international partners.

? You will take initiatives to strengthen the existing international research profile of the Mediterranean Archaeology section of GIA, including in particular its efforts to develop data modeling and supraregional integration of research data for Italy
